Strong Light–Matter Interaction in Quantum Emitter/Metal Hybrid Nanostructures

, 2017
Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are spatially confined electromagnetic field modes at a metal-dielectric interface capable of generating intense near-field optical forces on ultrafast time scales.

Optical Properties of Cluster–Matter: Influences of Interfaces

physica status solidi (a), 1999
Nanostructured material is characterized by its structuring interfaces. Cluster–matter, i.e. cluster/matrix systems, proved to be a well suited model system to study their electronic properties. The interactions between cluster and matrix induce structural and electronic effects which cause the interface to evolve into an extended interlayer.

Fusing Interfaces with Matter, Humans and Machines

Proceedings of the Symposium on Spatial User Interaction, 2018
Advances in the past century have resulted in unprecedented access to empowering technology, with user interfaces that typically provide clear distinction and separation between environments, technology and people. The progress in recent decades indicates, however, inevitable developments where sensing, display, actuation and computation will seek to ...

Functional Groups and Pore Size Distribution Do Matter to Hierarchically Porous Carbons as High-Rate-Performance Supercapacitors

, 2016
A series of nitrogen and oxygen enriched porous carbons are prepared from poly-N-phenylethanolamine (PNPEA) and polyaniline (PANI) conducting polymers through pyrolysis, chemical activation, and oxidation processes. Ar or N2-adsorption, Fourier transform

The interface tension in hot QCD matter

Nuclear Physics A, 1991
Abstract The pure gauge QCD can exist in the colour confining low temperature and non-confining high temperature phases. At the critical temperature Tc these two phases can coexist with an interface in between. We calculate the interface tension α associated with this interface by using a lattice Monte Carlo technique.

Mind over Matter: Brain-Machine Interfaces

2017
The neuroscientist and engineer, Jose M. Carmona begins this dialogue describing research in the field of brain-machine interface (BMI) and neurotechnology led by his own laboratory in UC Berkley. He outlines how his neural engineering research group works, defining it as a fusion of neuroscience with the main engineering disciplines, and how ...

Interfaces in nanostructures: optical investigations on cluster-matter

Nanostructured Materials, 1999
Abstract The importance of the internal interfaces between structural elements and their surroundings for the electronic properties of nanostructured materials is stressed by giving a brief overview of recent optical experiments on several different kinds of cluster-matter: (1) The Mie-absorption of silver nanoparticles embedded in various solid ...

Soft Matter Composites Interfacing with Biomolecules, Cells, and Tissues

2014
The parameters that affect and optimize the interactions at bio/non-biointerfaces are revised and analyzed in this chapter. We focus on soft polymeric materials starting with their critical properties that determine the viability of biological systems in contact with them.
