Modification of deeply buried hydrophobic interfaces by ionic surfactants [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2011
Hydrophobicity, the spontaneous segregation of oil and water, can be modified by surfactants. The way this modification occurs is studied at the oil–water interface for a range of alkanes and two ionic surfactants. A liquid interfacial monolayer, consisting of a mixture of alkane molecules and surfactant tails, is found.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Interface engineering of inorganic solid‐state lithium batteries via atomic and molecular layer deposition

open access: yesInfoMat
Currently, conventional organic liquid electrolytes (OLEs) are the main limiting factor for the next generation of high‐energy lithium batteries. There is growing interest in inorganic solid‐state electrolytes (ISEs).

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Recent progress of interface modification of layered oxide cathode material for sodium‐ion batteries

open access: yesElectron
With the advantages of similar theoretical basis to lithium batteries, relatively low budget and the abundance of sodium resources, sodium ion batteries (SIBs) are recognized as the most competitive alternative to lithium‐ion batteries.

Surface and Interface Modification of Electrode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries With Organic Liquid Electrolyte

open access: yesFrontiers in Energy Research, 2020
Developing efficient energy conversion and storage technology is gradually becoming more and more necessary with the increasing shortage of fuel resources and the growth of environmental pollution. Demand and applications for the emerging technology such

METALLIC INTERFACES AND PROPERTY MODIFICATION

open access: yesLe Journal de Physique Colloques, 1984
The electronic properties of Pd, Cr and V are modified by preparing them as epitaxial metal film sandwiches inside Au or Ag. New properties include near-magnetism or superconductivity on stretched Pd, high Tc superconductivity in fcc Cr and a lowered Tc in fcc V.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Effect of RAP surface modification on mechanical properties of stable crushed gravel with mineral admixture

open access: yesFrontiers in Materials
To address the key bottleneck of weakened bonding at the interface between inorganic binder and aggregate caused by the surface asphalt film on reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) coarse aggregate, a method using mineral admixture slurry for RAP interface ...
