Interfacial behaviour in Tunnel engineering [PDF]
The force imparted on the soil by a tunnel boring machine can lead to catastrophic tunnel collapse. To help predict this behaviour the machine is modelled as point source in an elastic/plastic idealized soil with no cohesion. The model predicts a wedge shaped region of plasticity extending from the machine.

Nanofiber scaffold gradients for interfacial tissue engineering [PDF]
We have designed a 2-spinnerette device that can directly electrospin nanofiber scaffolds containing a gradient in composition that can be used to engineer interfacial tissues such as ligament and tendon. Two types of nanofibers are simultaneously electrospun in an overlapping pattern to create a nonwoven mat of nanofibers containing a composition ...

Differentiation of physical and chemical cross-linking in gelatin methacryloyl hydrogels
Gelatin methacryloyl (GM) hydrogels have been investigated for almost 20 years, especially for biomedical applications. Recently, strengthening effects of a sequential cross-linking procedure, whereby GM hydrogel precursor solutions are cooled before ...

Structure and function of many transmembrane proteins are affected by their environment. In this respect, reconstitution of a membrane protein into a biomimetic polymer membrane can alter its function. To overcome this problem we used membranes formed by

ABSTRACT Background Medication nonadherence during the first 100 days after pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and during oncology treatment increases risk for complications. BMT4me is a caregiver‐facing mobile health (mHealth) application providing medication reminders, symptom tracking, and note‐taking features to support ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Characterizing the growth of PHA-producing microorganisms on short-chain carboxylic acids
Short-chain carboxylic acids are important chemical intermediates in anaerobic treatment or thermal hydrolysis of biowaste. They are a crucial precursor for the production of Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) by various microorganisms. However, there is limited
