A stroboscopic interferometer that can be used as either a Fizeau or a holographic interferometer is described. The instrument has been developed for real-time evaluation of dynamic optical components and for remote-site operation of an interferometer in the presence of severe acoustical noise and mechanical vibration effects.

A new type of a swinging interferometer, the carousel interferometer, is presented, and its properties are studied and compared with other swinging interferometers. The new interferometer is built with five plane mirrors. The optical path difference is accomplished by rotation of a system that consists of four mirrors.

The Virgo gravitational wave detector is an interferometer with 3 km long arms in construction near Pisa to be commissioned in the year 2000. Virgo has been designed to achieve a strain sensitivity of a few times at 200 Hz. A large effort has gone into the conception of the mirror suspension system, which is expected to reduce noise to the level of at ...

Abstract : Atom interferometers, in which atom or molecular de Broglie waves are coherently split and then recombined to produce interference fringes, have opened up exciting new possibilities for precision and fundamental measurements with complex particles. The MIT interferometer in particular also permits a new form of spectroscopy as it is the only

Reflection Plate Interferometer
Applied Optics, 1973The reflection plate interferometer, which is similar to a Schlieren system but with a small glass shearing plate replacing the knife edge, has been investigated and the necessary relations to understand its operating characteristics are presented. It was found that the optimum operating range is for incident angles between 40 degrees and 65 degrees ...

Nonlinear optical interferometer
Applied Optics, 1982The interferometer described, based on the second harmonic generation of light, is useful in the contouring of refractive objects with large variations in optical depth. The device is a real-time common-path self-referencing interferometer that yields interferograms in the visible with an equivalent wavelength of the order of 50 microm.

Second-harmonic interferometers
Optics Letters, 1980Experiments on interferometers based on the second-harmonic generation of light from phase-matched crystals are described. This technique has potential applications for transmission tests of semiconductors and for contouring the surface of a three-dimensional object with fringes corresponding to wavelengths much larger than that of visible light.
