Interlocking concrete paving blocks made with treated wastewater

open access: yesLabor e Engenho
Saving water of better quality for more important uses is critical in the context of preventing water scarcity. Prominent in this sense is the need to study not only the technical aspects involving environmentally conscious consumption, but also the acceptance of users, since appropriate technologies are of little value if they are not assimilated ...

An evaluation of enhanced geotextile layer in permeable pavement to improve stormwater infiltration and attenuation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This paper reports on an evaluation of the properties of a novel structure known as OASIS® which was designed at Coventry University as an enhancement of the commercially available geotextiles when incorporated in the permeable pavement system (PPS). The

Analysis of the manufacturing of concrete paving blocks with by-products from thermoelectric power plant

open access: yesCaderno Pedagógico
The key factor in constructing urban roads applying interlocking concrete block pavement (ICBP) is to employ an appropriate design method for better effectiveness. Concrete paving blocks (CPB) can also be manufactured using industrial by-products.

Examination of solidified and stabilized matrices as a result of solidification and stabilization process of arseniccontaining sludge with portland cement and lime [PDF]

open access: yesSongklanakarin Journal of Science and Technology (SJST), 2004
By solidification and stabilization (S/S) with Portland cement and lime, it is possible to reduce arsenic concentration in leachate of the arsenic-containing sludge from arsenic removal process by coagulation with ferric chloride.

Anti‐Slip Material‐Based Strategies and Approaches

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This review highlights the principle mechanisms of slipping at the microscale, linking contact mechanics with a friction behavior model for surface interfaces. Main strategies to develop anti‐slip properties to the surfaces are discussed alongside standardized testing approaches.

The effect of joint width between blocks in concrete block pavement [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Jointing sand is the main component of concrete block pavement (CBP) that promotes load transfer between blocks. Often, when sands are available from various sources, it becomes a difficult task to judge the right source of sand.

Collision‐Resilient Winged Drones Enabled by Tensegrity Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Based on structures of birds such as the woodpeck, this article presents the collision‐resilient aerial robot, SWIFT. SWIFT leverages tensegrity structures in the fuselage and wings which allow it to undergo large deformations in a crash, without sustaining damage. Experiments show that SWIFT can reduce impact forces by 70% over conventional structures.
