Vertical Distribution of Rocky Intertidal Organisms Shifts With Sea‐Level Variability on the Northeast Pacific Coast

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 30, Issue 10, October 2024.
This study examined whether the vertical distribution of rocky intertidal taxa has shifted with sea‐level variability occurring at multiple temporal scales and/or long‐term anthropogenic sea‐level rise on the Northeast Pacific Coast. We found that intertidal taxa largely do not exhibit significant vertical distribution shifts coherent with short‐term ...

Thermal plasticity has higher fitness costs among thermally tolerant genotypes of Tigriopus californicus

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 38, Issue 7, Page 1562-1577, July 2024.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Under climate change, ectotherms will likely face pressure to adapt to novel thermal environments by increasing their upper thermal tolerance and its plasticity, a measure of thermal acclimation. Ectotherm populations with high thermal tolerance are often less thermally

open access: yes, 2016
Competitive interactions between individuals from a single or different species can regulate population densities and individual growth. Two mussel species, Brachidontes rodriguezii and Perumytilus purpuratus coexist in the rocky intertidal zone of La ...

Assessing shorebird mortalities due to razor clam aquaculture at key migratory stopover sites in southeastern China

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 38, Issue 2, April 2024.
Abstract Aquaculture can provide foraging habitat for birds, but it can also result in intentional and accidental mortality. We examined an overlooked conflict between razor clam (Sinonovacula spp.) aquaculture and declining shorebirds in southeastern China's Fujian and Zhejiang provinces.

Place and sense of place on a road on the Atlantic coast of Patagonia, 1950-1970 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019

Importance of habitat heterogeneity in tidal flats to the conservation of migratory shorebirds

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 38, Issue 1, February 2024.
Abstract Understanding species distribution patterns and what determines them is critical for effective conservation planning and management. In the case of shorebirds migrating along the East Asian‐Australasian Flyway (EAAF), the loss of stopover habitat in the Yellow Sea region is thought to be the primary reason for the precipitous population ...

Opposing genetic patterns of range shifting temperate and tropical gastropods in an area undergoing tropicalisation

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 51, Issue 2, Page 246-262, February 2024.
Abstract Aim The poleward range expansion of tropical species, and range contraction of temperate species (known as tropicalisation) has mainly been studied from an ecological perspective, with little research on its genetic consequences. Here, we used distributional and genetic data to document the consequences of tropicalisation in rocky shore ...
