Extremal point processes and intermediate quantile functions
Probability Theory and Related Fields, 1990We prove an invariance principle in probability for planar point processes associated with extremal processes. The underlying sequence of random variables is absolutely regular, and satisfies a local asymptotic independence condition. A strong approximation for triangular arrays of such point processes is also stated. We apply these results to the weak

Candidate biomarkers for applications as intermediate end points of lung carcinogenesis
Journal of Cellular Biochemistry, 1992The need for validated intermediate end point markers to facilitate lung cancer chemointervention research is compelling. Three major classes of lung markers are relevant for this application. Since lung cancer includes four distinct histologies, markers that map degrees of histologic differentiation are important.

From the Countdown to an Intermediate Stopping Point
2012Three people are having a coffee break in the Faculty of Education at the University of Lapland: a professor, a senior researcher, recently graduated as a doctor and me, a lecturer who had just started writing her doctoral thesis. While drinking coffee, we talk about this and that and then our conversation turns to the writing of scientific articles ...

Intermediate versus hard end points in clinical trials on hypertension
Current Hypertension Reports, 2005The main features of randomized clinical trials performed in the field of hypertension treatment are reviewed, based either on the evaluation of clinical events or on the assessment of surrogate outcome measures. The advantages, limitations, and clinical relevance of each approach are highlighted.

Use of intermediate end-points to prevent long-term outcomes
Toxicology Letters, 1995Biomarkers may be very useful to assess and control the risk of long-term outcomes associated with exposure to industrial chemicals. Even when dose-effect and dose-response relationships have been demonstrated, the process of standard setting and the definition of 'safe' exposure levels is hampered by: (i) the arbitrary nature of attempts to ...

Optimal driving strategies with intermediate timing points
2011Fuel or energy savings of 10% or more can be achieved by providing train drivers with information on energy-efficient driving strategies. The Energymiser system uses optimal control theory to calculate a control strategy which minimizes the mechanical work done by the traction system to move a train from its current location and speed to the next ...
