Improved Internal Friction Apparatus

Review of Scientific Instruments, 1967
The authors have developed an apparatus which will allow the measurement of internal friction with a precision of ±1.3% with data processing time a matter of seconds. The apparatus was designed for the range of 2–20 cps; however, the principle can readily be applied to a much broader frequency range.

Internal Friction in Solids. I. Theory of Internal Friction in Reeds

Physical Review, 1937
In a vibrating reed opposite sides have dilations of opposite signs. Thus when one side is heated the other is cooled. At low frequencies the vibrations are isothermal. At high frequencies they are adiabatic. At intermediate frequencies they are of a hybrid type accompanied by internal friction. In this paper this internal friction is calculated solely

Distribution Of Internal Friction

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1964
A series of studies has been made in an attempt to determine the selection of the proper independent variable that will allow for the prediction of the distribution of internal friction in mechanical vibrators of various geometries. Previous studies of cylindrical vibrating bars have indicated that the loss is a sole function of the longitudinal strain.

Internal friction of neptunium

Journal of Nuclear Materials, 1969
Abstract The internal friction of neptunium has been measured from room temperature to 595 °C in a low-frequency inverted-torsion pendulum. Particular attention was given to the phase transformations by analyzing the data for the modes of transformation. In addition, a large peak was observed in the beta phase.

Internal Friction in Metals

Physical Review, 1928
A tubular specimen of the metal is made the elastic control of a heavy pendulum bar. The system can be set into forced vibrations, either bending or twisting the specimen, by a measured periodic magnetic force-couple. The resonance amplitude and frequency, with the moment of the impressed force-couple, yield the ratio of the energy dissipated in one ...

Internal friction in gadolinium

Philosophical Magazine, 1968
Abstract The low-temperature internal friction spectrum of gadolinium consists of two peaks, labelled α and β. The former is independent and the latter dependent on, the strain amplitude. Domain wall motion, induced by the applied stress, is responsible for both peaks, which are not caused by a relaxation mechanism.

Internal Friction of Quartz.

Journal of the Physical Society of Japan, 1960
The internal friction of transparent natural quartz was measured at room temperature with longitudinal vibration in kilocycle range using a composite piezo-electric oscillator. Specimens were cylinders axes of which took various orientations in the crystallographic YZ-plane.

Internal Friction in Metals

1950
A summary of the current knowledge on the subject of internal friction is presented. An experimental investigation of the variation of specific damping capacity with torsional stress for three metals is described. It is found that the specific damping capacity can be represented. Calculations are made of the effect on specific damping capacity of type
