Waist‐to‐height ratio and renal dysfunction as independent correlates of low handgrip strength in patients with type 2 diabetes

open access: yesJournal of Diabetes Investigation, EarlyView.
In 1,468 patients with type 2 diabetes, central obesity (WHtR >0.5) neutralizes the protective effects of higher BMI on muscle strength. Concurrently, visceral adiposity and CKD impose an additive threat, maximizing low handgrip strength risk (aOR = 1.74). Combining WHtR and renal tracking optimizes clinical sarcopenia screening.

The Anterolateral Transpedicular Transverse Process Screw Technique: Surgical Techniques, Biomechanical study and Preliminary Outcomes

open access: yesOrthopaedic Surgery, EarlyView.
This study designed a novel anterolateral screw placement technique and, based on this, developed a new anterolateral fixation method. Imaging, biomechanical, and short‐term efficacy analyses revealed that the Anterolateral Transpedicular Transverse Process Screw (ALTTS) technique achieves a high success rate for L5 vertebral fixation (pedicle width ...

Locked plate versus modified clamp‐rod internal fixation for feline corpus ilium fractures: A comparative clinical study

open access: yesVeterinary Surgery, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective To evaluate the applicability and clinical effectiveness of a modified clamp‐rod internal fixation (M‐CRIF) system compared with conventional locking plate osteosynthesis in the treatment of feline corpus ilium fractures. Study design Prospective, controlled clinical study.

Acute intermittent hypercapnic hypoxia augments left ventricular contractility

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Twenty‐four healthy adults were studied to determine the effects of an acute session of 40 min of intermittent hypercapnic hypoxia on cardiac performance. Cardiac function was assessed via echocardiography at rest and during graded stages of lower‐body negative pressure before and after the intervention to quantify load ...

Internal Iliac Artery Branching Pattern Variation

open access: yes, 2015
Textbooks emphasize the number and order of arteries that arise from the anterior and posterior divisions of the internal iliac artery. However, common trunks for internal iliac artery branches occur with varying frequency, which may lead to a decrease ...

Ovarian reserve after internal iliac artery ligation

open access: yes, 2018
AimLigation of major vessels supplying ovaries may alter hormones and ovarian reserve due to disturbances of vascular circulation. Our purpose is to measure serum anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) levels and ovarian volume in patients who had internal iliac ...

Determinants of maximal oxygen uptake in highly trained females and males: a mechanistic study of sex differences using advanced invasive methods

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend The results from this study show that maximal cardiac output, stroke volume and leg blood flow are similar between highly trained females and males after normalisation to lean body mass (LBM). However, the 10% higher haemoglobin concentration ([Hb]) and arterial O2 content in males result in higher systemic and leg O2 delivery ...
