Novel Insights on Ocean Internal Waves: Quantitative Surface Manifestations and Upper Ocean Layer Displacements From the Surface Water Ocean Topography Mission (SWOT) Measurements

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 13, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission provides unprecedented high‐resolution simultaneous observations of both sea surface height anomalies and sea surface roughness. Specifically, it enables more precise analysis of strong internal waves. Off the Amazon Shelf, in the Indonesian Seas, and near the Mascarene Ridge, internal wave

Indexing Power Through Self‐Reference: Electoral Margins and the Use of Běnxí Among Taiwanese Parliamentarians

open access: yesJournal of Sociolinguistics, Volume 30, Issue 1, Page 56-69, February 2026.
ABSTRACT This study examines how Taiwanese members of parliament (MPs) deploy self‐referring expressions—specifically, the formal first‐person singular běnxí—to negotiate their institutional standing and project political power. By operationalizing access to objective power using the margin of victory (MoV) as one possible proxy, the research shows ...

Solitary Internal Waves in Lake Biwa

open access: yesSolitary Internal Waves in Lake Biwa
This paper describes the behavior of large-amplitude nonlinear internal waves observed in Lake Biwa. A thermistor chain was moored in November of 1992, when the water column in the lake was still well stratified. After a continuous strong north-west wind, a wave train with two distinctive parts was observed traveling from the west to the east. First, a
