Coupled perturbed modes and internal solitary waves
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2003Coupled perturbed mode theory combines conventional coupled modes and perturbation theory. The theory is used to directly calculate mode coupling in a range-dependent shallow water problem involving propagation through continental shelf internal solitary waves.

Atmospheric Internal Solitary Waves
2006The solitary waves that have been observed in the atmosphere fall broadly into two classes: those that propagate in a fairly shallow stratified layer near the ground and those that occupy the entire troposphere. We present a survey of the observations of both types of solitary waves. The generation mechanisms differ substantially for these two types of

Nonlinear Wave Equations for Oceanic Internal Solitary Waves
Studies in Applied Mathematics, 2015In the coastal ocean, the interaction of barotropic tidal currents with topographic features such as the continental shelf, sills in narrow straits, and bottom ridges are often observed to generate large amplitude, horizontally propagating internal solitary waves.

Internal solitary waves with subsurface cores
Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2019Large internal solitary waves with subsurface cores have recently been observed in the South China Sea. Here fully nonlinear solutions of the Dubreil–Jacotin–Long equation are used to study the conditions under which such cores exist. We find that the location of the cores, either at the surface or below the surface, is largely determined by the sign ...

Solitary internal waves in deep water
Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1967A new type of solitary wave motion in incompressible fluids of non-uniform density has been investigated experimentally and theoretically. If a fluid is stratified in such a manner that there are two layers of different density joined by a thin region in which the density varies continuously, this type of wave propagates along the density gradient ...

The basic theory of internal solitary waves is developed, with the main emphasis on environmental situations, such as the many occurrences of such waves in shallow coastal seas and in the atmospheric boundary layer. Commencing with the equations of motion for an inviscid, incompressible density-stratified fluid, we describe asymptotic reductions to ...

Breaking of shoaling internal solitary waves
Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2010The breaking of fully nonlinear internal solitary waves of depression shoaling upon a uniformly sloping boundary in a smoothed two-layer density field was investigated using high-resolution two-dimensional simulations. Our simulations were limited to narrow-crested waves, which are more common than broad-crested waves in geophysical flows.

Experiments on solitary internal Kelvin waves
Deep Sea Research Part B. Oceanographic Literature Review, 1983Elementary calculations indicate that the effect of the Earth's rotation is likely to be important in the dynamics of most internal waves in oceans, lakes and the atmosphere. Here we present measurements of the structure and properties of one class of such waves, namely solitary internal Kelvin waves, in which the Coriolis force generated by wave ...

The stability of internal solitary waves
Mathematical Proceedings of the Cambridge Philosophical Society, 1983A theory is developed relating to the stability of solitary-wave solutions of the so-called Benjamin-Ono equation. This equation was derived by Benjamin (5) as a model for the propagation of internal waves in an incompressible non-diffusive heterogeneous fluid for which the density is non-constant only within a layer whose thickness is much smaller ...

Experiments on leapfrogging internal solitary waves
Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1982Experiments on the resonant energy transfer between internal gravity-wave solitons travelling along neighbouring pycnoclines have been performed. Measurements of both amplitude and phase oscillations are found to be in qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions given in the companion paper by Liu, Pereira & KO (1982).
