Shoaling internal solitary waves

Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2013
The evolution and breaking of internal solitary waves in a shallow upper layer as they approach a constant bottom slope is examined through laboratory experiments. The waves are launched in a two‐layer fluid through the standard lock‐release method.

Internal Solitary Waves

Studies in Applied Mathematics, 1992
The expansion procedure introduced by Benney (1966) for weakly nonlinear, planar shallow‐water waves is used to provide an alternative derivation of the more general results of Benjamin (1966) for shallow fluid layers possessing arbitrary vertical stratification and horizontal shear.

On the breaking of internal solitary waves at a ridge

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2002
An experimental laboratory study has been carried out to investigate the propagation of an internal solitary wave of depression and its distortion by a bottom ridge in a two-layer stratified fluid system. Wave profiles, density fields and velocity fields have been measured at three reference locations, namely upstream, downstream and over the ridge.

The stability of internal solitary waves

Mathematical Proceedings of the Cambridge Philosophical Society, 1983
A theory is developed relating to the stability of solitary-wave solutions of the so-called Benjamin-Ono equation. This equation was derived by Benjamin (5) as a model for the propagation of internal waves in an incompressible non-diffusive heterogeneous fluid for which the density is non-constant only within a layer whose thickness is much smaller ...
