Multimodal Assessment of Kidney Quality During 24‐h of Normothermic Machine Perfusion

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
Normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) has emerged as a promising tool for assessing kidney quality prior to transplantation; however, reliable biomarkers remain to be established. In this study, thirteen porcine kidneys were perfused for 24 h using an autologous leukocyte‐filtered whole blood‐based perfusate applying urine recirculation.

Predictors of Brain Infarction in Pediatric Patients During Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
In 179 pediatric ECMO patients, brain infarction (BI) occurred in 28% and was linked to markedly higher 30‐day mortality. VA ECMO mode (vs. VV) and higher pre‐ECMO arterial lactate independently predicted BI, supporting standardized neuro‐monitoring and liberal early brain CT, especially for children on VA ECMO.

Standardization of In Vitro Evaluation of Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) Devices for Research and Development

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Extracorporeal life support (ECLS) technology has witnessed remarkable advancements during the last decades. However, further research and development of devices are required to increase, for example, performance‐efficiency, hemocompatibility, and long‐term stability.

Paediatric Index of Mortality 3 in Sweden: Validation and Recalibration to Improve Mortality Prediction in Paediatric Intensive Care

open access: yesActa Paediatrica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aim In Sweden, critically ill children are admitted to one of four dedicated paediatric intensive care units (PICUs) or general intensive care units (ICUs), reflecting a partly centralised system. The Paediatric Index of Mortality 3 (PIM3) is a widely used risk stratification tool for predicting mortality in critically ill children. This study
