Rethinking internet traffic management
Proceedings of the 2007 ACM CoNEXT conference on - CoNEXT '07, 2007In the Internet today, traffic management spans congestion control (at end hosts), routing protocols (on routers), and traffic engineering (by network operators). Historically, this division of functionality evolved organically. In this paper, we perform a top-down redesign of traffic management using recent innovations in optimization theory.

Fractal Traffic Model for Internet Traffic Engineering
2002Traffic models have been at the core of teletraffic research for the last several decades because they have traditionally served as fundamental tools for network performance analysis. With the recent discovery of fractal characteristics of Internet traffic, the need for fractal traffic models that play beyond this traditional role has grown ...

Internet traffic classification demystified
Proceedings of the 2008 ACM CoNEXT Conference on - CONEXT '08, 2008Recent research on Internet traffic classification algorithms has yield a flurry of proposed approaches for distinguishing types of traffic, but no systematic comparison of the various algorithms. This fragmented approach to traffic classification research leaves the operational community with no basis for consensus on what approach to use when, and ...

Designing traffic profiles for bursty Internet traffic
Global Telecommunications Conference, 2002. GLOBECOM '02. IEEE, 2003The paper proposes a new class of traffic profiles that is better suited for metering bursty Internet traffic streams than the traditional token bucket profile. A good traffic profile should satisfy two criteria: first, it should consider packets from a conforming traffic stream as in-profile with high probability to ensure a strong QoS guarantee ...

This chapter takes you on a journey on Internet traffic, from understanding its profile (i.e., by modeling and analysis) to generating packets or flows (either real or synthetic), in diverse environments. Usual decision network engineers and researchers find when designing performance evaluation experimental plans that are concerned with traffic ...

Traffic identification using artificial neural network [Internet traffic]
Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering 2001. Conference Proceedings (Cat. No.01TH8555), 2002The paper investigates the use of artificial neural networks (ANN) to unconventionally classify Internet traffic. Structurally and functionally, the classifier used is a feedforward multilayer layer perceptron (FFMLP) network trained using backpropagation. The inputs are random samples of bits from a bit stream (i.e.

On Stochastic Models of Internet Traffic
2015The paper discusses various models of self-similar Internet traffic and techniques for estimating the intensity of Long-Range Dependence (LRD). In the experimental part real data sets collected in IITiS PAN are used together with synthetic LRD flows generated using Fractional Gaussian noise and Markov modulated Poisson processes.

Research on traffic taxonomy for Internet traffic classification
2011 13th Asia-Pacific Network Operations and Management Symposium, 2011Various traffic analysis methods are suggested to use and handle the limited internet resource efficiently due to the rapid increase in the amount of Internet traffic. However, the analysis results cannot be used effectively, as there is no established system and standard for classification.

Traffic and interference adaptive scheduling for Internet traffic in UMTS
Proceedings ISCC 2002 Seventh International Symposium on Computers and Communications, 2003In this paper we propose a scheduling strategy for the radio resources management when transmitting Internet traffic over third-generation systems. More precisely, we consider the UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) Time Division Duplex (TDD) mode standardized by ETSI. UTRAN TDD uses a hybrid solution of code and time division multiple access,
