Interoceptive Accuracy in Nonclinical Panic
Cognitive Therapy and Research, 2003The psychological models of panic disorder predict that people with this anxiety disorder are able to accurately estimate changes in somatic sensations. This study investigated whether nonclinical panickers, at risk for developing panic disorder, demonstrate enhanced interoceptive ability for changes in sympathetic arousal.

Normal interoceptive accuracy in women with bulimia nervosa
Psychiatry Research, 2016Previous studies suggest that patients suffering from bulimia nervosa (BN) have difficulties in perceiving internal bodily signals, mostly assessed by self-report questionnaires. Whether interoception is, in this case, attenuated or not remains an open question.

Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation improves interoceptive accuracy [PDF]
How can interoceptive accuracy, i.e. the objective ability to identify interoceptive signals, be improved? In the present study, we investigated whether non-invasive stimulation of the auricular branch of the vagus nerve (taVNS) modulates cardiac interoceptive accuracy, interoceptive sensibility, i.e. confidence in the identification of bodily signals,

Interoceptive accuracy predicts nonplanning trait impulsivity
Psychophysiology, 2019AbstractInfluential theories concerning personality argue that many impulsive individuals show physiological underarousal at rest. This interoceptive state is proposed to be egodystonic, motivating impulsive maladaptive actions to enhance arousal. However, there is little empirical research on this matter.

Differential effects of anxiety and depression on interoceptive accuracy
Depression and Anxiety, 2009Feedback from the body is assumed to be altered in depression. Nevertheless, empirical studies investigating this assumed relationship remain sparse. This study aimed to examine interrelations between the ability to perceive heartbeats accurately (interoceptive awareness), depressive symptoms, and anxiety in healthy participants.A well-validated ...

Assessment of interoceptive accuracy in individuals with epilepsy
Epilepsy & BehaviorInteroception, conceptualized as the ability to discern internal bodily signals, is integral to the regulation of emotions, cognitive functioning, and overall physiological well-being. This phenomenon is delineated into three distinct dimensions: accuracy, sensibility, and awareness.

A latent state‐trait analysis of interoceptive accuracy
Psychophysiology, 2018AbstractInteroceptive accuracy (IAc), that is, the ability to accurately perceive one's own bodily signals, is widely assumed to be a trait, although experimental manipulations such as stress may affect IAc. We used structural equation modeling to estimate the reliability of IAc, and the proportions of individual differences in IAc, explained by a ...

Personality and Individual Differences, 2021
Abstract Interoception is the sense of the body's physiological state. Both the ability to accurately perceive bodily signals, and the self-reported sensibility for the body were assumed to be reciprocally associated with negative affect. Up to now, the specific interplay between dimensions of interoception and negative affect remains largely unknown.

Abstract Background Interoception represents perception of the internal bodily state which is closely associated with social/emotional processing and physical health in humans. Understanding the mechanism underlying interoceptive processing, particularly its modulation, is thus of great importance ...

Loneliness and interoceptive accuracy in the elderly population
