Turbulent Heating of Solar Wind Plasma Downstream of Magnetohydrodynamic Shocks

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Interplanetary (IP) shocks are believed to play a significant role in both amplifying the background level of turbulent fluctuations and in heating the bulk solar wind (SW). This study investigates the thermodynamic properties downstream of IP shocks. We

Modification of the Power Spectral Density of Magnetic Field Fluctuations by Quasi-perpendicular Interplanetary Shocks

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
We investigate the role of interplanetary (IP) shocks in solar wind turbulence using observations of Solar Orbiter, Parker Solar Probe, and Wind. Employing statistical analysis of quasi-perpendicular fast forward (FF) and fast reverse (FR) shocks, we ...

Computations on the interaction of an interplanetary shock with the Earth's magnetosphere

open access: yesAstrophysics and Space Science, 1977
We present the results of a one-dimensional computer simulation of the interaction between interplanetary shocks and the Earth's magnetosphere. The position of the bowshock as a function of solar wind velocity and interplanetary field direction is studied.

Formation of H+ PUI Tails Downstream of Distant Interplanetary Shocks

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
New Horizons’ Solar Wind Around Pluto (SWAP) instrument has observed interplanetary shocks from ∼20 to 60 au from the Sun. Different studies have analyzed the effects of these shocks on the solar wind ion (SWI) and interstellar pickup ion (PUI ...

Low Density Drivers of Strong Interplanetary Shocks [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Astronomical Union Colloquium, 1996
AbstractThe theory that most, if not all, interplanetary shocks are caused by coronal mass ejections (CMEs) faces serious problems in accounting for the strongest shocks. The difficulties include (i) a remarkable absence of very strong shocks during solar maximum 1980 when CMEs were prolific, (ii) unrealistic initial speeds near the Sun for impulsive ...

Earthbound Interplanetary shocks unconnected with coronal mass ejections

open access: yes, 2005
An associated study by Howard and Tappin (2005) identified 7 Earthbound forward shocks (of which 3 were geoeffective) which were not connected with any detectable coronal mass ejection activity along the Sun-Earth line.

Parker Solar Probe Observations of Turbulence and Waves between a Current Sheet and an Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejection–Driven Shock

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We report on unusual magnetic wave activity seen in a region between the crossing of a current sheet and an interplanetary shock by the Parker Solar Probe (PSP).

Similarities and Differences between ICME-driven Shocks Observed by VEX (∼0.72 au) and WIND (∼1.0 au)

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The features of interplanetary shocks driven by interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) observed by WIND (∼1.0 au) and Venus Express (VEX; ∼0.72 au) during the same period are statistically analyzed by comparing their similarities and differences ...

Evidence for superdiffusive shock acceleration at interplanetary shock waves

open access: yesJournal of Physics: Conference Series, 2015
Recent analysis of time profiles of energetic particles accelerated at interplanetary shocks has shown evidence for superdiffusive transport upstream of the shock fronts, namely for a transport characterized by a particle mean square displacement that grows faster than linearly in time.
