Variations in carbon emissions from vehicles at signalised intersections

open access: yes, 2011
Carbon emissions from road transport make up 20% of the total greenhouse gas emissions in the UK. Therefore, reducing carbon emissions from road transport is significant in reaching carbon reduction targets.

Stresses in the vicinity of an un-reinforced mitre intersection: an experimental and finite element comparison

open access: yes, 2007
The experimental investigation reported provides elastic stresses in the vicinity of the unreinforced intersection of a single 90° mitred bend, subjected to an in-plane bending moment. The specimen was extensively strain gauged on the outer surface.

Rafting of Ni‐Based Superalloys Under Multiaxial Load as Understood by Phase‐Field Simulations and Critical Experiments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Phase‐field simulations coupled with dislocation‐density‐based crystal plasticity modeling reproduce γ′ rafting behavior in single‐crystal Ni‐based superalloys under varied loading conditions. The model captures both macroscopic creep and microscopic morphology evolution, with results matching high‐temperature creep experiments.

Walk or wait?: An empirical analysis of street crossing decisions [PDF]

open access: yes
We examine the behaviour of pedestrians wishing to cross a stream of trasffic at signalized intersections. We model each padestrian as making a desccrete crossing choice by comparing the gaps between vehicles in traffic to an individual-specific ...

Critical Gaps at Unsignalized Intersections with Bending Right-of-Way

open access: yes, 2018
The capacity calculation procedure for unsignalized intersections is based on the gap-acceptance theory in most of existing capacity regulations and it relies on one of the important parameters - critical gap.

Phase Field Failure Modeling: Brittle‐Ductile Dual‐Phase Microstructures under Compressive Loading

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The approach by Amor and the approach by Miehe and Zhang for asymmetric damage behavior in the phase field method for fracture are compared regarding their fitness for microcrack‐based failure modeling. The comparison is performed for the case of a dual‐phase microstructure with a brittle and a ductile constituent.

Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.

Intersecting families with bounded intersections

open access: yes
Let $\mathcal F\subset 2^{[n]}$ be an $s$-uniform family such that every two distinct sets have a nonempty intersection but intersect in at most $k$ elements. By the well-known Ray-Chaudhuri--Wilson theorem, since the intersections can take at most $k$ different values, we have $|\mathcal F|\leq \binom{n}{k}$.

Crash Risk Reduction at Signalized Intersections Using Longitudinal Data

open access: yes
This study extends the previous work of Burkey and Obeng (2004) that examined the impact of red light cameras on the type and severity of crashes at signalized intersections in Greensboro, NC. The extension takes the following form.

Multimodal Data‐Driven Microstructure Characterization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A self‐consistent autonomous workflow for EBSP‐based microstructure segmentation by integrating PCA, GMM clustering, and cNMF with information‐theoretic parameter selection, requiring no user input. An optimal ROI size related to characteristic grain size is identified.
