Bayesian inference of interseismic coupling along the East Anatolian Fault using geodetic data
Historically, the East Anatolian Fault Zone (EAFZ) has regularly produced MW ~ 7 earthquakes, but has also occasionally ruptured in MW ~ 8 events. After a century without any significant earthquake, the MW 6.8 Elazığ (24 Jan. 2020), MW 7.8 and MW 7.6 Kahramanmaraş (6 Feb. 2023) events occured in a new sequence of major earthquakes.Emile Denise +4 more

On April 16 2016, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred along the Nazca-South America plate interface near the city of Pedernales in Ecuador. GPS measurements in the years prior to the earthquake had indeed shown a partial and spatially heterogeneous pattern of interseismic coupling in central-northern Ecuador (Nocquet et al., 2014, Chlieh et al., 2014).
