Tipping points in complex coupled life-environment systems

open access: yes, 2013
Simple models of complex phenomena provide powerful insights and suggest low-level mechanistic descriptions. The Earth system arises from the interaction of subsystems with multi-scale temporal and spatial variability; from the microbial to continental ...

Porcine kidney xenotransplantation: From primate models to clinical reality

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
In the face of a critical shortage of human donor kidneys for end‐stage renal disease patients, porcine kidney xenotransplantation has emerged as a viable solution. This field has navigated major hurdles, including immune rejection, physiological incompatibilities, potential biomechanical differences and the risk of cross‐species infection. To overcome

Sources of Identity: Ukrainian Naive in Modern Graphic and Interspecies Design

open access: yesDemiurge: Ideas, Technologies, Perspectives of Design
The aim of the article is to analyse theoretical studies of naive art in Ukraine and implemented design solutions; to study patterns, possibilities and effective methods of designers’ appeal to the creative work of naive artists; to formulate recommendation conclusions on the development of this type of design practice. Research methods.

Descriptive, comparative, and functional anatomy of the facial musculature in cattle (Bos taurus)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Facial expressions can provide insight into animal emotions and pain, but no standardized system for assessing the entire facial display in cattle (Bos taurus Linnaeus) exists. The Facial Action Coding System (FACS), originally developed for humans, identifies distinct facial movements based on mimetic muscles.

FERAL WOOL. Designing with a vibrant matter with care and cosmoecological perspective in times of troubled abundance

open access: yesInmaterial
Feral Wool is an ongoing research-through-design project that takes place in the South Tyrol region in Italy. It explores the concept of overflowing and overlooked local wool that becomes a troubled abundance due to the global dynamics of the ...

Heat Stress and Gut Microbiome Dynamics in Poultry: Interplay, Consequences, and Mitigation Strategies

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Heat stress disrupts gut microbial balance in poultry, impairing nutrient absorption and immunity. This review outlines the interplay between thermal stress and microbiome dynamics and discusses integrative mitigation strategies, probiotics, phytogenics, cooling systems, and genetic adaptation to enhance poultry resilience.

Use of Clotrimazole in Finfish Aquaculture: Mechanistic Insights, Limitations, and Future Directions for Antifungal Therapy

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
This review critically evaluates clotrimazole as a potential antifungal for finfish aquaculture, highlighting strong mechanistic and in vitro efficacy against aquatic mycoses alongside major gaps in in vivo evidence, toxicokinetics, residue safety, and environmental risk, outlining priorities for responsible therapeutic development and regulatory ...

Population pharmacokinetics of levofloxacin in breastmilk in patients with rifampicin‐resistant tuberculosis

open access: yesBritish Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Levofloxacin is a widely used antibiotic included in rifampicin‐resistant tuberculosis (RR‐TB) treatment. Data describing levofloxacin concentrations in breastmilk and infant exposure are limited. We analysed data from two South African studies of breastfeeding women receiving levofloxacin (750–1000 mg daily) for RR‐TB.

Population pharmacokinetic modelling of amoxicillin in human breast milk—A contribution from the ConcePTION project

open access: yesBritish Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Aims Amoxicillin, a widely used β‐lactam antibiotic, requires improved pharmacokinetic characterization during breastfeeding. This study used a population pharmacokinetic (PopPK) approach to model amoxicillin concentrations in breast milk, identify variability sources and estimate infant exposure, applying worst‐case scenarios.

Integrating Earth System Knowledge and Planetary Justice: Digital Modules for Systems Thinking

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Environmental Education
Education for sustainable development requires an understanding of complex Earth system processes with an ethical reflection on global justice. In this context, concepts such as planetary boundaries and the Doughnut model serve as reference frameworks ...
