Crown structure and competitive interactions in mixed forests: Insights from an individual‐based model

open access: yesEcological Research, EarlyView.
Conifers adapt to high‐latitude regions with narrow crowns, while broadleaf trees form spherical crowns in low‐latitude areas. This study utilized the Spatially Explicit Individual‐Based Dynamic Global Vegetation Model to analyze the impact of crown morphology on competition and ecosystem productivity.

Overwintering foraging tactics of sedentary sika deer in a region prone to heavy snow in northern Japan

open access: yesEcological Research, EarlyView.
We present the overwintering foraging tactics adopted by the sika deer recently established in a heavy snowfall region of northern Japan. We found that sedentary deer adopted risk‐averse foraging by switching their dietary compositions to readily available foods under different snow conditions. In particular, when facing extreme snowfall, they depended

Prowling through palm: Exploring spatial patterns of male Sunda leopard cats across two oil palm plantations in Kinabatangan, Sabah

open access: yesEcological Research, EarlyView.
Industrial oil palm plantations threaten biodiversity in Southeast Asia, yet some native species are highly adaptable within these environments. Our study tracked four male leopard cats (Prionailurus javanensis) with GPS collars in the Kinabatangan floodplain, Sabah, revealing average home ranges of 8.60 km² (95% MCP) and 5.39 km² (95% a‐LoCoH), with ...

Disentangling biotic and abiotic factors influencing host–parasitoid interactions of butterflies, tachinid flies, and nematodes

open access: yesEcological Research, EarlyView.
The defensive function of mutualistic ants for the Reverdin's Blue butterfly against two groups of parasitoids (tachinid flies and mermithid nematodes) differs among ant species, and this is affected by the number of precipitation days in the larval period of the butterfly.

Where do “process‐oriented” community ecologists go? In search of general laws that are just “good enough”

open access: yesEcological Research, EarlyView.
In this study, we report that the distinction between pattern‐ and process‐oriented approaches in community ecology is often ambiguous, as revealed through a literature review. We identify three key factors—researchers' interests, methods, and views on significance—that shape the perception and evaluation of these approaches. Our findings highlight the

Breaking the norm: Absence of seed size/seed number trade‐off in Hymanaea stigonocarpa, a tree species from the Brazilian semi‐arid

open access: yesPlant Species Biology, EarlyView.
Seed size/number trade‐off is a central topic in plant biology as it reflects ecological and evolutionary aspects of the species. Here we report the absence of a trade‐off mass/number of seeds and fruits in a polyspermic plant probably associated to abortion of self‐pollinated pistils and flowers.

Foraging by predatory ants: A review

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
This review focuses on ecological and behavioral characteristics of foraging in ants showing the wide diversity of cases. Most ants can feed on sugary substances, but some ground‐nesting species are strict predators. Except army ants during the nomadic phase, they are central‐place foragers that can recruit nestmates when necessary. They prey mostly on
