Photometry and Classification of Stars in the Direction of the Dark Cloud TGU 619 in Cepheus. II. Interstellar Extinction and Cloud Distance

open access: yesOpen Astronomy, 2011
Interstellar extinction is investigated in a 1.5 square degree area of the Cepheus Flare in the direction of the dark cloud TGU 619 at ℓ=102.5°, b=+15.5°.

Unusual relative strengths of the diffuse interstellar bands in some interstellar dust clouds [PDF]

open access: yes
Some of the diffuse interstellar features (DIBs) in the spectra of certain stars at high galactic latitudes (1 is greater than 15 degrees) are unusually weak or absent while others have the strength expected for their color excess.

Discovery of Thionylimide, HNSO, in Space: The first N-, S-, and O-bearing Interstellar Molecule

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
We present the first detection in space of thionylimide (HNSO) toward the Galactic center molecular cloud G + 0.693-0.027, thanks to the superb sensitivity of an ultradeep molecular line survey carried out with the Yebes 40 m and IRAM 30 m telescopes ...

Interstellar clouds containing optically thick H2

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1975
The theory of Black and Delgarno that the relative populations of the excited rotational levels of H2 can be understood in terms of cascading following absorption in the Lyman and Werner bands is employed to infer the gas densities and radiation fields within diffuse interstellar clouds containing H2 that is optically thin in those bands.

Strength Ratios of Diffuse Interstellar Bands in Slightly Reddened Objects

open access: yesUniverse
The disk of the Milky Way fills the interstellar medium in the form of discrete clouds, many (∼30) light-years across. The average density of this medium is 1 hydrogen atom per cm3 (Oort limit), in the clouds—several dozen atoms, and between the clouds ...

The Passage of the Solar System through the Edge of the Local Bubble

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The Sun moves through the interstellar medium (ISM) at a velocity of ∼19 pc Myr ^−1 , making the conditions outside the solar system vary with time over millions of years.

Cloud-cloud collisions in the interstellar medium

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1980
Results are presented from time-dependent numerical simulations of cloud-cloud collisions in the interstellar medium. Special emphasis is placed on physically detailed models of cloud collisions. The numerical simulations include heating, cooling, thermal conductivity, self-gravity, and molecule formation; magnetic fields have been neglected.

Modeling the Far-infrared Polarization Spectrum of a High-mass Star-forming Cloud

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The polarization spectrum, or wavelength dependence of the polarization fraction, of interstellar dust emission provides important insights into the grain alignment mechanism of interstellar dust grains.
