Aditional Ultra-High-Resolution Observations of Ca+ Ions in the Local Insterstellar Medium [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
We present ultra-high-resolution (0.35 km s−1 FWHM) observations of the interstellar Ca K line towards seven nearby stars. The spectral resolution was sufficient to resolve the line profiles fully, thereby enabling us to detect hitherto unresolved ...

Turbulent Driving Scales in Molecular Clouds

open access: yes, 2009
Supersonic turbulence in molecular clouds is a dominant agent that strongly affects the clouds' evolution and star formation activity. Turbulence may be initiated and maintained by a number of processes, acting at a wide range of physical scales.

THE ABUNDANCE OF BORON IN DIFFUSE INTERSTELLAR CLOUDS [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2011
We present a comprehensive survey of boron abundances in diffuse interstellar clouds from observations made with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) of the Hubble Space Telescope. Our sample of 56 Galactic sight lines is the result of a complete search of archival STIS data for the B II 1362 resonance line, with each detection confirmed by ...

INVESTIGATION OF DIFFUSE INTERSTELLAR BANDS OF ORGANIC MOLECULES IN THE SPECTRA OF CEPHEID STARS

open access: yesOdessa Astronomical Publications, 2016
We describe an effective method of investigation of the Diffuse Interstellar Bands (DIBs) in the spectra of Cepheid stars. DIBs are believed to originate from the absorption of such carriers as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the interstellar gaseous

Science Opportunities for IMAP-Lo Observations of Interstellar Neutral Helium, Neon, and Oxygen during a Maximum of Solar Activity

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, 2023
Direct-sampling observations of interstellar neutral (ISN) species and their secondary populations give information about the physical state of the local interstellar medium and processes occurring in the outer heliosheath.

Extended Red Emission in High Galactic Latitude Interstellar Clouds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
We report initial results from an optical imaging survey of optically thin high Galactic latitude clouds, which is designed to study the surface brightness, structure, and spectral energy distribution of these objects. The primary aim of this paper is to

Exact Rovibronic Equivalence of the Adiabatic and Diabatic Representations of N$$ N $$‐Coupled State Diatomic Systems

open access: yesJournal of Computational Chemistry, Volume 46, Issue 20, July 30, 2025.
A novel method demonstrates the numerical equivalence of adiabatic and diabatic representations in N‐state coupled diatomic systems. This crucial finding provides an efficient and accurate way to assess the importance of non‐adiabatic effects, which are often disregarded without rigorous quantitative checks.

The Determination of Electron Abundances in Interstellar Clouds [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1979
A new method for estimating electron fractions in shielded molecular clouds is proposed on the basis of gas phase ion-molecule reactions which involves measuring the quantity . Applied to existing data, it yields upper limits to Xe in the range from 10−8 to 10−7 for a variety of clouds, warm as well as cool.

What Rogue Hydrogen Clouds Tell Us about Galactic Magnetic Fields

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Observations of the Milky Way and external galaxies support the idea that large-scale magnetic fields are concentrated in galactic disks, with halo magnetic fields at least an order of magnitude weaker.

Molecular Hydrogen and its Proxies HCO+ and CO in the Diffuse Interstellar Medium

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
There is a robust polyatomic chemistry in diffuse, partially molecular interstellar gas that is readily accessible in absorption at radio/millimeter/submillimeter wavelengths.
