The 2200 A bump and the UV extinction curve
The 2200 A bump is a major figure of interstellar extinction. Extinction curves with no bump however exist and are, with no exception, linear from the near-infrared down to 2500 A at least, often over all the visible-UV spectrum.

[C II] absorption and emission in the diffuse interstellar medium across the Galactic plane [PDF]
Aims. Ionized carbon is the main gas-phase reservoir of carbon in the neutral diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) and its 158 μm fine structure transition [C ii] is the most important cooling line of the diffuse ISM.

Clusters Stagnating During Condensation: Metastable Material or a Separate State of Matter?
Condensation stagnation, that is, the existence of a delay between nucleation and growth during the gas‐phase particle formation, is a crucial phenomenon, which manifests itself as the presence of supercritical clusters in resulting particulates. The light emission signature of stagnant clusters is identified in the magnesium particle flame in air, and,

The Local Group L-band Survey: Probing Cold Atomic Gas in IC 10 with Neutral Hydrogen Absorption
We present the first localized detections of the cold neutral medium (CNM) in IC 10, offering a rare view of dense atomic gas in a low-metallicity ( Z / Z _⊙ ∼ 0.27) dwarf galaxy.

Interstellar absorption lines in the spectrum of 3C 273
Absorption lines near the rest wavelengths of the Si IV doublet (wavelengths 1393.76, 1402.77) with equivalent widths 533 and 235 mA are reported in the spectrum of QSO 3C 273. The profiles show the nature of hot gas along a high-latitude (b = 64 deg) line of sight through our entire halo.

An extended XMM-Newton observation of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4051. I. Evidence for a shocked outflow
An extended XMM-Newton observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051 has revealed a rich absorption line spectrum indicating the presence of a photoionized outflow with a wide range of velocities and ionization parameter.

The Gaia-ESO Survey: Extracting diffuse interstellar bands from cool star spectra: DIB-based interstellar medium line-of-sight structures at the kpc scale [PDF]
Aims. We study how diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) measured toward distance-distributed target stars can be used to locate dense interstellar (IS) clouds in the Galaxy and probe a line-of-sight (LOS) kinematical structure, a potentially useful tool ...

Sleep and Dreams as Reflected by Science Fiction Literature and Films—Anything to Learn From?
ABSTRACT Sleep and dreams are frequent themes in science fiction (Sci‐Fi) literature and films, often used to explore questions about consciousness, reality, technology and the human experience. Sci‐Fi authors and filmmakers utilise the enigmatic nature of sleep and dreams to blur the boundaries between reality and imagination, raising philosophical ...

The chemistry of fluorine-bearing molecules in diffuse and dense interstellar gas clouds
We present a theoretical investigation of the chemistry of fluorine-bearing molecules in diffuse and dense interstellar gas clouds. The chemistry of interstellar fluorine is qualitatively different from that of any other element, because - unlike the ...

First detection of [N II] 205 micrometer absorption in interstellar gas [PDF]
We present high resolution [NII] 205 micrometer ^3P_1-^3P_0 spectra obtained with Herschel-HIFI towards a small sample of far-infrared bright star forming regions in the Galactic plane: W31C (G10.6-0.4), W49N (G43.2-0.1), W51 (G49.5-0.4), and G34.3+0.1 ...
