Astrophysics of the Interstellar Medium
2021This book is based on a series of lectures for an Astrophysics of the Interstellar Medium (ISM) master’s degree in Astrophysics and Cosmology at Padova University. From the cold molecular phase in which stars and planetary systems form, to the very hot coronal gas that surrounds galaxies and galaxy clusters, the ISM is everywhere.

Although most of the mass of the Milky Way Galaxy is condensed into stars, interstellar space is not completely empty. It contains gas and dust, in the form both of individual clouds and of a diffuse medium. Interstellar space typically contains about one gas atom per cubic centimetre and 100 dust particles per cubic kilometre.

Small missions for energetic astrophysics, 1999
The study of the interstellar medium has been, and remains, a rich field for exploitation using small missions in the ultraviolet and X-ray spectral regions. I review the history of some such missions (of various sizes), and I also review the capabilities for study of the interstellar medium of “Hot Universe Background Explorer” (HUBE), as it was ...

This chapter gives a brief introduction on the interstellar medium (ISM). It starts with an overview (Sect. 1.1) of the ISM properties including some worth-mentioning historical events that took place during its discovery and exploration. We then highlight the importance of the dust in ISM (Sect.
