Understanding intertemporal choices

Applied Economics, 2006
Previous experimental results show clearly that many subjects do not optimize when solving a life-cycle consumption problem. What do they do? This paper attempts to resolve this question, looking at the discounting, hyperbolic and rolling models as possible explanations.

Empirical determinants of intertemporal choice [PDF]

open access: possibleJournal of Financial Economics, 2015
Abstract We provide new evidence on the empirical determinants of intertemporal financial decisions. We use an exogenously imposed choice affecting nearly all Croatian retirees to study characteristics associated with choosing a larger, deferred stream of payments over a smaller, more immediate payment.

Anomalies in Intertemporal Choice?

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2007
This paper argues that observations of non-stationary choice behavior need not necessarily imply specific properties of the individual's discount function. As we show, the observed "anomalies" in intertemporal choice can alternatively be explained by an individual's perception of the risk that is involved whenever an outcome is to be received in the ...

Intertemporal Choice

2010
A Clark’s nutcracker (Nucifraga columbiana) flies to the top of a pine tree and selects one of the many cones. She twists and pecks at the stem until the cone breaks free from the branch and, with one foot, holds the cone in the crotch of a branch. She then repeatedly hammers her long bill in between the scales of the cone.

Intertemporal choice in Parkinson's disease

Movement Disorders, 2011
AbstractThe administration of dopamine agonists in Parkinson's disease has been associated with impulse control disorders, in particular, pathological gambling. In the present investigation, 17 patients with Parkinson's disease without impulse control disorders and 17 matched control participants were offered choices between monetary rewards (ranging ...

Intertemporal tenure choices

Journal of Urban Economics, 1987
Abstract An intertemporal model of household tenure choice is estimated using data from the Michigan Panel Survey on Income Dynamics. Unlike empirical studies that focus on household tenure differences at any point in time, this analysis considers choice patterns over a 4-year period. The estimation results often indicate substantial leads, lags, and

Stereotypes in intertemporal choice

Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, 2009
Abstract We conduct a laboratory experiment exploring the existence of stereotypes in intertemporal decision-making. Participants were asked to predict intertemporal decisions made by third parties described only by age and gender. We find evidence of significant age and gender stereotyping with respect to intertemporal preferences.

Intertemporal Individual Choices

2000
In this chapter let us consider again the individual optimization problem facing an agent, either a consumer or a firm,1 who/which must solve his/her/its decision problem in a dynamic framework. The aim is to study how individual decisions are taken over calendar time, here considered as a discrete variable.
