Computational analysis for competition flows in arteriovenous fistulas based on non-contrast magnetic resonance imaging [PDF]
Introduction: Characteristics of hemodynamics strongly affect the patency of arteriovenous fistula (AVF) in hemodialysis patients. Because of pressure balance changes among arteries after AVF construction, regurgitating flow occurs in some patients.

A computational study of viscoelastic blood flow in an arteriovenous fistula [PDF]
A finite element analysis of flows of an Oldroyd-B fluid is developed, to simulate blood flow in an arteriovenous fistula. The model uses a combination of a standard conforming finite element approximation for the momentum equation, and the discontinuous Galerkin method, with upwinding, for the equation governing the evolution of the extra stress.

Background. Tension-free repair using mesh has become the standard treatment for abdominal wall incisional hernias. However, its postoperative complications reportedly include mesh infection, adhesions, and fistula formation in other organs.

Treatment of intestinal fistulas
Abstract There have been three major advances in the treatment of small bowel fistulas since 1960: irrigation with lactic acid; total or parenteral nutrition; and continuous low flow enteric nutrition. The causation and clinical features of these fistulas are reviewed.

Tipping Elements in the Human Intestinal Ecosystem [PDF]
Recent studies show that the microbial communities inhabiting the human intestine can have profound impact on our well-being and health. However, we have limited understanding of the mechanisms that control this complex ecosystem. Based on a deep phylogenetic analysis of the intestinal microbiota in a thousand western adults we identified groups of ...

An unusual case of hematemesis: Spontaneous reno-duodenal fistula
Different diseases may cause gastrointestinal bleeding. A fistula infrequently manifest with severe intestinal bleeding, when excluding those directly involving vascular structures.

Intestinal gluconeogenesis and glucose transport according to body fuel availability in rats [PDF]
Intestinal hexose absorption and gluconeogenesis have been studied in relation to refeeding after two different fasting phases: a long period of protein sparing during which energy expenditure is derived from lipid oxidation (phase II), and a later phase characterized by a rise in plasma corticosterone triggering protein catabolism (phase III).

Feedback patterns in simulating intestinal wall motions: interdisciplinary approach to the motility mechanisms [PDF]
Ability of smooth muscles to contract in response to distension plays a crucial role in motor function of intestine. Qualitative analysis of dynamical models using myogenic active property of smooth muscles has shown well agreement with physiologic data.

Gallstone ileus: An unusual cause of intestinal obstruction
Gallstone ileus is an infrequent cause of intestinal obstruction. It is typically the result of cholecystoduodenal fistula, computed tomography scan is the best modality for the diagnosis.
