The influence of uncertainty and intolerance of uncertainty on anxiety
Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry, 2018Although the influence of uncertainty and intolerance of uncertainty (IU) on anxiety pathologies has been well-established, only a few studies examined the interaction between uncertainty and IU in producing anxiety. Meanwhile, there is a lack of research utilizing experimental methods to manipulate the situational uncertainty.

Intolerance of uncertainty and obsessive-compulsive disorder dimensions
Journal of Anxiety Disorders, 2021Intolerance of uncertainty (IU), which can include prospective (i.e., desire for predictability) and inhibitory (i.e., uncertainty paralysis) IU, is widely understood to be a central underlying component of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). IU has several treatment implications, yet research on the differences in IU underlying OCD dimensions is ...

Intolerance of uncertainty and addiction
2020Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) is the tendency to interpret ambiguous situations as negative. IU is often measured using the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (IUS). This chapter shows evidence that IU is a key feature of drug addiction. We discuss several studies showing how IU relates to different symptoms of drug abuse.

Intolerance of uncertainty in obsessive-compulsive disorder
Journal of Anxiety Disorders, 2003Pathological doubt, a prominent feature of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), may be related to difficulty tolerating ambiguous or uncertain situations. This is thought to be particularly true of those patients with checking compulsions. Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) has been studied extensively within the domains of worry and generalized anxiety ...

Intolerance of Uncertainty and Adult Separation Anxiety
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, 2014Intolerance of uncertainty (IU)-the tendency to react negatively to situations that are uncertain-is involved in different anxiety disorders and depression. No studies have yet examined the association between IU and symptoms of adult separation anxiety disorder.

Intolerance of Uncertainty and Intolerance of Ambiguity: Similarities and differences
Personality and Individual Differences, 2005Abstract In the model of Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) proposed by Dugas, Gagnon, Ladouceur, and Freeston (1998) , Intolerance of Uncertainty (IU) plays a central role in the acquisition and maintenance of worries. A similar concept, Intolerance of Ambiguity (IA) was introduced by Frenkel-Brunswik 50 years ago. For decades, IU has been confused

Intolerance of uncertainty and reinstatement
2023The return of fear model of reinstatement is an understudied phenomenon that may shed some light on the mechanisms of clinical relapse seen in anxiety disorders. Previous studies have found altered threat responding during reinstatement phases of classical threat conditioning tasks connected to Intolerance of uncertainty (IU), an emerging ...

Intolerance of Uncertainty in OCD
2017Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) is a key cognitive construct in the maintenance of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms. Whereas most individuals feel “certain-enough” that situations are relatively safe, those with OCD who have elevated IU have difficulty managing the feeling of not knowing “for sure” whether a feared outcome may occur.

Intolerance of Uncertainty, Fear of Anxiety, and Adolescent Worry
Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, 2012A 5 year, ten wave longitudinal study of 338 adolescents assessed the association between two forms of cognitive vulnerability (intolerance of uncertainty and fear of anxiety) and worry. Multilevel mediational analyses revealed a bidirectional and reciprocal relation between intolerance of uncertainty and worry in which change in one variable partially

Neural Correlates of Intolerance of Uncertainty in Clinical Disorders
The Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences, 2015Intolerance of uncertainty is a key contributor to anxiety-related disorders. Recent studies highlight its importance in other clinical disorders. The link between its clinical presentation and the underlying neural correlates remains unclear. This review summarizes the emerging literature on the neural correlates of intolerance of uncertainty.
