Fire-diffuse-fire calcium waves in confined intracellular spaces
Bulletin of Mathematical Biology, 2004The propagation of fire-diffuse-fire Ca(2+) waves through a three-dimensional rectangular domain is considered. The domain is infinite in extent in the direction of propagation but with lateral barriers to diffusion which contain Ca(2+) pumps. The Ca(2+) concentration profile due to the firing of a release site (spark) is derived analytically based on ...

k-space image correlation to probe the intracellular dynamics of gold nanoparticles
Journal of Instrumentation, 2016The collective action of dynein, kinesin and myosin molecular motors is responsible for the intracellular active transport of cargoes, vesicles and organelles along the semi-flexible oriented filaments of the cytoskeleton. The overall mobility of the cargoes upon binding and unbinding to motor proteins can be modeled as an intermittency between ...

Possible processes in the immune surveillance of the intracellular space
Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1973Abstract Many potentially antigenic substances in stable cells lie intracellularly and are generally thought to lie outside the purview of immunologic surveillance. Arguments countering this notion are presented herein. It is further suggested that intracellular spaces are monitored by lymphocytes migrating through other cells in the process of ...

The use of activation analysis and radiosulfate space to determine intracellular sodium
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1959Abstract Activation analysis of dog skeletal muscle by both β- and γ-counting is described. Sample bombardment was with slow neutrons produced with a 2-m.e.v. positive-ion accelerator. The mean sodium content was 38.08 ± 1.81 meq./kg. wet weight and the mean intracellular sodium was 15.61 ± 2.18 meq./kg.ICS.

The hexagonal lattice spacing of intracellular crystalline tobacco mosaic virus
Journal of Ultrastructure Research, 1976Previous estimates of hexagonal lattice spacing of the highly unstable, lamellar-twinned, intracellular tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) crystals have varied between 15 and 23 nm. In this study, the crystals have been examined by freeze-etching. Short periods (1–5 min) of glycerol or sucrose infiltration were applied before freezing.

How Complex Is Cancer Intracellular Signaling Space in FIB-SEM Images?
2012 Sixth UKSim/AMSS European Symposium on Computer Modeling and Simulation, 2012How cell regulates its intracellular features to optimize their signaling pathways is still far from understanding. Recent advancement in microscopy imaging of the structure of cell organelles enables biomedical researchers to study cell morphology in great detail to discover the pathogeneses of diseases by information obtained at molecular level.

Cells Tissues Organs, 1990
In this study, the interstitial space and myocytes were investigated qualitatively and morphometrically in samples from beating, fibrillating as well as from cardioplegically HTK-arrested hearts fixed by immersion or perfusion. The size of tissue clefts separating bundles of myocytes and that of the interstitial space within bundles of myocytes depend ...

An intracellular study of space and time representation in primary visual cortical receptive fields
Journal of Physiology-Paris, 1996In contrast with previous knowledge based on extracellular recordings, the recent development of intracellular techniques in vivo (sharp electrode or 'blind patch') ideally allows experimenters to analyze and dissect the contribution of feedforward and lateral connectivity in the functional expression of a synaptic 'integration field'.

Space-Clamp Problems When Voltage Clamping Branched Neurons With Intracellular Microelectrodes
1985The dendritic surface area of a neuron may be 10, 20, or even 100 times greater than the surface area of the neuron soma. This dendritic membrane provides a large distributed capacity that is electrically coupled to the soma by various cable distances along the branched core conductor.
