A stochastic model for intracellular active transport

open access: yesBiomath, 2018
We develop a stochastic model for an intracellular active transport problem. Our aims are to calculate the probability that a molecular motor reaches a hidden target, to study what influences this probability and to calculate the time required for the ...

The determination of intracellular water space by NMR

open access: yesFEBS Letters, 1985
A new method for the determination of intracellular water space using NMR spectroscopy is described. The method is based on the measurement of 59Co NMR signal intensity of an inert, stable and membraneimpermeable cobalt(III) compound such as Co(CN)6 3− or Co(imidazole)6 3+ and the 2H or 1H NMR signal intensities of the freely permeable water.

Epoxysuccinyl peptide-derived cathepsin B inhibitors: Modulating membrane permeability by conjugation with the C-terminal heptapeptide segment of penetratin [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Besides its physiological role in lysosomal protein breakdown, extralysosomal cathepsin B has recently been implicated in apoptotic cell death. Highly specific irreversible cathepsin B inhibitors that are readily cellpermeant should be useful tools to ...

Orthophosphate Turnover in the Extracellular and Intracellular Space of Mouse Liver [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Biochemistry, 1969
The flux rates of Pi from blood plasma into the extracellular and intracellular space of mouse liver have been measured in vivo with the [32P]Pi-tracer technique. The specific radioactivities of plasma Pi and total liver Pi have been measured 0.1–4 min after injection of carrier-free [32P]Pi.

Intracellular Toxic AGEs (TAGE) Triggers Numerous Types of Cell Damage

open access: yesBiomolecules, 2021
The habitual intake of large amounts of sugar, which has been implicated in the onset/progression of lifestyle-related diseases (LSRD), induces the excessive production of glyceraldehyde (GA), an intermediate of sugar metabolism, in neuronal cells ...

Nitric oxide synthase blockade and body fluid volumes

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, 2002
The influence of chronic nitric oxide synthase inhibition with N G-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) on body fluid distribution was studied in male Wistar rats weighing 260-340 g.

Effect of macromolecular crowding on the kinetics of glycolytic enzymes and the behaviour of glycolysis in yeast [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Water is involved in all aspects of biological activity, both as a solvent and as a reactant. It is hypothesized that intracellular water is in a highly structured state due to the high concentrations of macromolecules in the cell and that this may ...

Impact of limited solvent capacity on metabolic rate, enzyme activities, and metabolite concentrations of S. cerevisiae glycolysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The cell's cytoplasm is crowded by its various molecular components, resulting in a limited solvent capacity for the allocation of new proteins, thus constraining various cellular processes such as metabolism.

Signalling in space and time: systems dynamics of intracellular communication [PDF]

open access: yesEMBO reports, 2011
The EMBO Spatial meeting took place in May 2011 in Switzerland. It promoted interactions between cell biologists, neuroscientists, system biologists and mathematicians, all united by a common interest in understanding how cells integrate signals in space and time.

The material properties of a bacterial-derived biomolecular condensate tune biological function in natural and synthetic systems

open access: yesNature Communications, 2022
“Intracellular phase separation is emerging as a universal principle for organizing biochemical reactions in time and space. Here the authors show that PopZ condensate dynamics support cell division and using PopZ modular architecture, the tunable PopTag
