Witnessing the intracluster medium assembly at the cosmic noon in JKCS 041 [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2023
In this work we study the intracluster medium of a galaxy cluster at the cosmic noon: JKCS 041 at z = 1.803. A 28h long Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) observation using MUSTANG-2 allows us to detect JKCS 041 , even if intrinsically extremely faint compared to

Turbulence in the Intracluster Medium [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We review our knowledge about turbulence in the intracluster medium, a very hot, dilute plasma that permeates clusters of galaxies. A thorough understanding of turbulence in the intracluster medium is crucial for the use of clusters to determine cosmological parameters.

Turbulence decay in the density-stratified intracluster medium [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2019
Turbulence evolution in a density-stratified medium differs from that of homogeneous isotropic turbulence described by the Kolmogorov picture. We evaluate the degree of this effect in the intracluster medium (ICM) with hydrodynamical simulations.

Turbulence in stratified atmospheres: implications for the intracluster medium [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2020
The gas motions in the intracluster medium (ICM) are governed by turbulence. However, since the ICM has a radial profile with the centre being denser than the outskirts, ICM turbulence is stratified.

Turbulent density and pressure fluctuations in the stratified intracluster medium [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2020
Turbulent gas motions are observed in the intracluster medium (ICM). The ICM is density-stratified, with the gas density being highest at the centre of the cluster and decreasing radially outwards.

The history of chemical enrichment in the intracluster medium from cosmological simulations [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2017
The distribution of metals in the intracluster medium (ICM) of galaxy clusters provides valuable information on their formation and evolution, on the connection with the cosmic star formation and on the effects of different gas processes.

Suppressed heat conductivity in the intracluster medium: implications for the magneto-thermal instability

Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2020
In the outskirts of the intracluster medium (ICM) in galaxy clusters, the temperature decreases with radius. Due to the weakly collisional nature of the plasma, these regions are susceptible to the magneto-thermal instability (MTI), which can sustain ...

Metals in the intracluster medium

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2012
We derived radial abundance profiles of O, Mg, Si, S and Fe in the intracluster medium (ICM) of several clusters and groups of galaxies up to about 0.3 r180 with Suzaku and those of Fe in 28 nearby brightest clusters of galaxies up to 0.3-0.5 r180 with XMM. Within 0.05 r180, Fe abundance scatters from 0.5 to 1 solar.

The Intracluster Medium

1992
Clusters of galaxies are full of hot, diffuse plasma, with typical temperatures and electron densities of T ~ 7x107 K and n e ~ 10-3 cm-3, This intraclustermedium (ICM) produces copious X-ray emission, and typical cluster X-ray luminositiesare L x ~ 1043 - 1045 ergs s-1.
