Restoring Touch through Intracortical Microstimulation of Human Somatosensory Cortex

2017 New Generation of CAS (NGCAS), 2017
Intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) offers a potential method to restore somatosensory perception in people that have lost this capacity through injury or disease. Under an Investigation Device Exemption, a twenty-eight year old participant with a long-term cervical spinal cord injury was implanted with two ...

Effects of intracortical microstimulation on the activity of limb muscles in alert rabbits

Neuroscience and Behavioral Physiology, 1985
Motor and EMG responses of the limbs to intracortical microstimulation (IM) were studied in 14 rabbits. The motor representations (MR) of contralateral limbs are separately located in the neocortex. The zone of wrist control lies in the center the MR of the forepaw, surrounded by the zones of the forearm and shoulder.
