Medical and nutritional aspects of intractable diarrhea

Journal of the American Dietetic Association, 1980
Diarrhea can be due to at least five pathogenetic mechanisms. Major examples of each are presented to better illustrate each type of diarrhea and to provide a springboard for discussion of the nutritional management of each class of diarrhea. Certainly, specific diseases require specific therapies, such as avoidance of gluten in adult coeliac disease ...

Intractable Diarrhea of Infancy

Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, 1974
An infant had persistent diarrhea with malnutrition. Her course was also complicated by the development of hemolytic-uremic syndrome with laboratory evidence of consumption coagulopathy. She died on the 53rd day of hospitalization and at autopsy lymphangiectasis involving the mesentery, small intestine, pancreas, and right lung was found.

Pancreatic Adenoma With Intractable Diarrhea, Hypokalemia, and Hypercalcemia

JAMA, 1964
A syndrome of profuse watery diarrhea, hypokalemia, and hypercalcemia, without gastric hypersecretion or ulcer is associated with pancreatic adenoma. Excision of a parathyroid adenoma and then hyperplastic parathyroid tissue temporarily relieved symptoms and restored serum calcium and serum potassium values to normal.

Dietary management of intractable diarrhea in malnourished patients

Journal of the American Dietetic Association, 1980
Patients with protein-calorie malnutrition frequently have a flattened intestinal mucosa, resulting in diarrhea and malabsorption. Repletion of nutritional status is essential for repair for the gut tissue and clinical improvement of diarrhea and malabsorption. Rapid enteral refeeding, however, may cause severe setbacks in progress.

Intractable Diarrhea: Value of the Small Intestinal Biopsy

Pediatrics, 1981
In summarizing their article on intractable diarrhea of infancy Rossi et al1 stated, "a small bowel biopsy is useful in assessing the degree of injury present and guiding nutritional support." We concur that the small bowel biopsy is useful in assessing mucosal injury but has certain limitations.

[Severe protracted diarrhea in infancy ("intractable diarrhea")].

Monatsschrift Kinderheilkunde : Organ der Deutschen Gesellschaft fur Kinderheilkunde, 1983
In most cases, protracted diarrhea in infants is due to lack of human breast milk, and iatrogenic malnutrition. Damage to the mucosa of the small intestine maintained by cow's milk proteins and malnutrition constitute main parts of a vicious circle interrupted by completely parenteral nutrition for some time, and slow reintroduction of human breast ...
