Intractable pain and cordotomy

BMJ Supportive & Palliative Care, 2020
I was interested in the national UK data on percutaneous cervical cordotomy for cancer-related pain.1 They affirm it is effective and early referrals should be considered, rather than analgesics which may be suboptimally effective but also have side effects.

Ventilatory response to intractable pain

Pain, 1981
Fifty-two patients, admitted to a pain relief unit, had a cannula placed in the radial artery to measure the paO2, paCO2 and pH of arterial blood every 2 h, for periods ranging from 12 to 24 h. The patients were divided into 3 groups: 14 had low back pain, 21 patients had pain from cancer, and 17 had pain from other causes. Twenty were male and 32 were

Anterior commissurotomy for intractable pain [PDF]

open access: possibleJournal of Neurosurgery, 1977

Thalamotomy for Alleviation of Intractable Pain

Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, 1974
17 patients had thalamotomies for alleviation of pain due to malignancy since January, 1970. In 12 of them, thalamic electrodes were implanted through occipital burr holes for subsequent radiofrequency thalamotomies. In 4 cases, the lesions were made by the bifrontal approach and 1 case was approached from the left occipital and right frontal.

Neurosurgical treatments of intractable pain

Metabolism, 2010
Intractable pain may require neurosurgical intervention. This review provides a critical update of neurosurgical techniques available to treat this condition. Neurosurgery can affect pain's pathways from the receptor up to the "centers" of its reception and perception, either by destroying or by stimulating them.

Cingulotomy for Intractable Pain

2019
Chronic pain is a common and often debilitating condition. This pain can be intractable to pharmacologic treatment, thereby necessitating non-pharmacologic approaches. Here we review anterior cingulotomy as a surgical solution to intractable chronic pain, from assessment and planning through the procedure and aftercare.
