The Intramedullary Compression Rod
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1977The Kaessmann compression device was employed in 26 patients with fractures of the long bones. In 15 fractures of the tibia, prompt healing occurred, even in fractures in the distal one-fourth of the tibia. Most of these cases were treated without external plaster support, and were permitted early ambulation, with partial weight-bearing.

The Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery, 2009Surgical reconstruction for limb salvage is an acceptable and often preferred treatment for patients who are facing potential amputation. Because of the invasive nature of these surgeries, complications such as infection are not uncommon. Osseous infection at the site of implantable hardware may result in a tremendous consequence to the patient.

Intramedullary Rodding in Osteogenesis Imperfecta
Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, 2000The results of intramedullary rodding of long bones of 16 children with osteogenesis imperfecta, over a 10-year period, were analyzed. Sheffield elongating rods or non-elongating rods were used. The frequency of fractures was dramatically reduced after implantation of either type of rod, and the ambulatory status improved in all instances.

Heterotopic Ossification After Femoral Intramedullary Rodding
Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, 1993Heterotopic ossification (HO) after femoral intramedullary rodding is a significant complication of the procedure. One hundred eighteen cases of femoral roddings performed on 113 patients were available for review. The data were computerized and evaluated using univariate analysis and multivariate regression analysis.

Complications of Intramedullary Rods in Osteogenesis Imperfecta
Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, 1988Twenty-nine patients with osteogenesis imperfecta underwent 108 intramedullary roddings with 42 Bailey-Dubow rods and 66 nonelongating rods. The average age at insertion of the first rod was 5 years; average follow-up was 3.1 years (range 1-9 years). The overall complication rate was 60%-69% for Bailey-Dubow rods and 55% for nonelongating rods.

Techniques in Orthopaedics, 2003Summary The results of operative treatment of humeral nonunion after intramedullary rod fixation have not been as good as treatment for nonunion after nonoperative treatment or plate fixation. This could be in part the result of the shoulder damage that occurs when removing a well-buried anterograde intramedullary fixation device.

Retrieval and analysis of intramedullary rods.
The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, 1981We examined ten intramedullary rods of similar design after routine retrieval from patients. Of these ten rods, four were found to exhibit cracking around their proximal third. This behavior could not be attributed to the surgical techniques employed or to the length of time in vivo of these rods.

Retrieval and Analysis of Intramedullary Rods
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1984From 1980 to 1983, 16 AO intramedullary femoral rods were retrieved and analyzed clinically, radiographically, and metallurgically. Cracking and/or fracture was observed in four of the 16 specimens. All cracks occurred at the point of maximum stress at the end of the slot. In two cases a structurally weaker weld zone coincided with this location.

Removal of Intramedullary Rods After Femoral Shaft Fracture
Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, 1992We are reporting a retrospective review of the removal of 60 intramedullary rods in 58 patients. All fractures had healed at the time of rod extraction. The implant was removed from 34 asymptomatic patients (36 femurs). Twenty-four patients (24 femurs) had preoperative symptoms attributed to the femoral rod.
