Difficulties during removal of fluted femoral intramedullary rods.
The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, 1989The difficulties that were encountered during removal of a fluted intramedullary femoral rod from six patients were reviewed. The mechanisms of failure included metal breakage at three different locations along the rod or the rod extractor. Three of the six rods were left in place due to difficulties in removal.

Knee Fusion with Intramedullary Rods for Failed Total Knee Arthroplasty
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1985Knee fusion was obtained after failed total knee arthroplasty with the aid of internal fixation by use of intramedullary rods. The method has been used in eight cases, including difficult situations characterized by morbid obesity, segmental fractures, and loss of bone stock.

Anatomical Curvature of the Femoral Medullary Canal for Intramedullary Rodding
Journal of Biomechanics, 1987The shape of most of the intramedullary and interlocking nails commonly used has been determined empirically as a segment of a circle. The radius of curvature of the Kuntscher nail, e.g., has a length of 3500 mm, the Aesculap-Kuntscher 3500 mm, the Grosse-Kempf 3000 mm, the AO 4000 mm, and the Klemm-Schellmann 3500 mm.

Novel Venting Technique for Intramedullary Rod Fixation of Pathologic Fractures
Orthopedics, 2011This article introduces a novel technique to vent the femur and potentially decrease the embolic load created by reaming during intramedullary rod fixation of impending pathologic femur fractures. We used readily available operating room equipment to create a distal femoral vent hole without interfering with standard intramedullary instrumentation and ...

Experiences with Lengthening of the Femur over an Intramedullary Rod
The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, 19561. The intramedullary rod has been used to control the alignment of the osteotomized fragments in twenty-three operations performed for the lengthening of the femur, and it has been found to be eminently satisfactory, eliminating many of the difficulties which were formerly encountered in maintaining the position of the osteotomized fragments. 2.

Minimally Invasive Intramedullary Rod Fixation of Multiple Metacarpal Shaft Fractures
Techniques in Hand & Upper Extremity Surgery, 2008Metacarpal shaft fractures tend to shorten and angulate. This tendency is accentuated with the fracture of multiple metacarpals. A variety of methods for treatment have been described. The purpose of this study is to present the results of treatment in patients with multiple metacarpal shaft fractures, treated in a minimally invasive manner, with an ...
