Terra Nova, 1993In continental areas it is often difficult to determine the cause of intraplate magmatism. Large volumes of magma, high eruption rates, and the presence of a hotspot trace on the adjacent ocean floor, are all evidence for the presence of an anomalously hot mantle.

Nature, 1973Focal mechanisms of about eighty intraplate earthquakes and other information on in situ stress indicate that the interiors of many lithospheric plates are characterised by large horizontal compressive stresses. These stresses seem to be related to the driving mechanism of plate tectonics.

Geological Society, London, Special Publications, 2011Abstract High-energy seismicity is historically recorded in Tripolitania, Libya suggesting that this area, far from Mediterranean convergent margin, is currently deforming. How this deformation relates to surrounding tectonics of the Africa-Europe convergence is still poorly known.

Geology, 1991A belt of deformation in the Solimoes basin of northwestern Brazil extends east-northeast from near the Peruvian border for about 1300 km. The belt is characterized by the en echelon arrangement of folds and faults interpreted as the result of right-slip displacements in a transpressive regime.
