On the Dynamics of Intraseasonal Oscillations and ENSO

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1988
This paper investigates some basic properties of low-frequency phenomena in the tropical atmosphere and the coupled ocean-atmosphere system, with an aim of seeking a unified dynamical framework for studies of the mechanisms of intraseasonal oscillations and the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The role of specific processes leading to intraseasonal

Intraseasonal Oscillation Indices from Complex EOFs

Journal of Climate, 2021
AbstractIndices of oscillatory behavior are conveniently obtained by projecting the fields in question into a phase space of a few (mostly just two) dimensions; empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) or other, more dynamical, modes are typically used for the projection.

Seasonal and intraseasonal oscillations in a monsoonal estuary

2023
Estuaries on the Indian subcontinent are influenced by the Asian Summer Monsoon and show strong seasonality. As a result, these estuaries are often referred to as monsoonal estuaries (Vijith et al., 2009).  The seasonal cycle is superposed with intra-seasonal oscillations (ISO) with periods ranging from 10 to 90 days.

Intraseasonal Oscillations over the Atlantic

Journal of Climate, 1993
Abstract Winds at low (near-surface) and 200-mb levels from National Hurricane Center objective analyses are used to elucidate the structure and dynamics of the tropical and subtropical intraseasonal oscillations for the North Atlantic/northeast Pacific regions, including over the continents, for the years 1980–1989.

Seasonality and mechanisms of tropical intraseasonal oscillations

Climate Dynamics, 2017
This study has compared the monsoon intraseasonal oscillation (MISO) during the boreal summer and Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) during the boreal winter. Based on MISO and MJO in high-resolution three-dimensional diabatic heating, the possible mechanisms are discussed through observational analyses of dynamical and thermodynamical variables. The MISO

Stochastic Forcing of ENSO by the Intraseasonal Oscillation

Journal of Climate, 1999
Abstract Using the ideas of generalized linear stability theory, the authors examine the potential role that tropical variability on synoptic–intraseasonal timescales can play in controlling variability on seasonal–interannual timescales. These ideas are investigated using an intermediate coupled ocean–atmosphere model of the El Nino–Southern ...

Radiation Budget of the Tropical Intraseasonal Oscillation

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2004
Abstract This study examines the relationship between precipitation and radiative heating on intraseasonal time scales in the Tropics using collocated top-of-atmosphere (TOA) and surface radiative flux measurements from special field program data [Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program and Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere Coupled Ocean ...

A Model for the Boreal Summer Intraseasonal Oscillation

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1997
Abstract The tropical intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) exhibits pronounced seasonality. The boreal summer ISO is more complex than its winter counterpart due to the coexistence of equatorial eastward, off-equatorial westward, and northward propagating, low-frequency modes and their interactions.

Bimodal representation of the tropical intraseasonal oscillation

Climate Dynamics, 2011
The tropical intraseasonal oscillation (ISO) shows distinct variability centers and propagation patterns between boreal winter and summer. To accurately represent the state of the ISO at any particular time of a year, a bimodal ISO index was developed.

On the Origin of the Tropical Intraseasonal Oscillation

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1987
This study provides an explanation for the origin of the tropical intraseasonal (40-50 day) oscillation (TIO) based on a simple generalization of Gill's linear analytic model for tropical large-scale heat-induced circulation. The solution contains a convective region that excites an eastward-moving Kelvin wave and a westward-moving Rossby wave.
