The Intraseasonal and Interannual Variability of Arctic Temperature and Specific Humidity Inversions

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2019
Temperature and humidity inversions are common in the Arctic’s lower troposphere, and are a crucial component of the Arctic’s climate system. In this study, we quantify the intraseasonal oscillation of Arctic temperature and specific humidity

An extratropical window of opportunity for subseasonal prediction of East Asian summer surface air temperature

open access: yesnpj Climate and Atmospheric Science, 2023
Previous studies suggest that boreal summer intraseasonal variations along the subtropical westerly jet (SJ), featuring quasi-biweekly periodicity, frequently modulate downstream subseasonal variations over East Asia (EA).

Is there regime behavior in monsoon convection in the late 20th century? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Mixture model techniques are applied to a daily index of monsoon convection from ERA‐40 reanalysis to show regime behavior. The result is the existence of two significant regimes showing preferred locations of convection within the Asia/Western‐North ...

Seasonal Characteristics of Mesoscale Convective Systems Over the Philippines

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
This study examines how mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) over the Philippines are most frequent during boreal summer, while those in winter are longer‐lived and more intense due to cold surges and enhanced easterly moisture transport. Intraseasonal oscillations, such as the Madden‐Julian Oscillation (MJO) and the Boreal Summer Intraseasonal ...

Assessment of the Ability of CMIP6 GCMS to Simulate the Boreal Summer Intraseasonal Oscillation Over Southeast Asia

open access: yesFrontiers in Climate, 2021
The boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation (BSISO) plays an important role in the intraseasonal variability of a wide range of weather and climate phenomena across the region modulated by the Asian summer monsoon system.

Seasonal cycle of precipitation variability in South America on intraseasonal timescales [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The seasonal cycle of the intraseasonal (IS) variability of precipitation in South America is described through the analysis of bandpass filtered outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) anomalies.

Alaskan Ridge Blocking and Associated Winter Cold Conditions Over North America

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
Multi‐decadal (1979–2023) analysis reveals that wintertime reductions in the meridional gradient of potential vorticity (PVy) over the Bering Sea are recurrent but episodic features of North Pacific circulation. These suppressed PVy states consistently co‐occur with amplified Alaskan ridging, weakened mid‐tropospheric westerlies and a downstream warm ...

Deep Learning Improves Prediction of the Boreal Summer Intraseasonal Oscillation Using Predictive Source Analysis

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
The Boreal Summer Intraseasonal Oscillation (BSISO) is a prominent tropical intraseasonal variability during summer. It propagates northeastward from the northern Indian Ocean to the western North Pacific and has a more complex structure than the winter ...

Mysterious Intraseasonal Oscillations in Monsoons

open access: yesEos, 2017
The unpredictable cycles of rainfall during India's summerlong monsoon have stymied scientists for decades.

Covariance of the intertropical discontinuity and African easterly jet in Sahelian wet and dry years

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Intertropical discontinuity and African easterly jet (AEJ) positions are strongly correlated, with a more pronounced linear relationship across wet years. Surface heat flux anomalies modify low‐level temperature and sensible heat flux gradients that shift the AEJ core south of the gradient maxima in both composites.
