Dynamical ocean forcing of the Madden-Julian Oscillation at lead times of up to five months [PDF]
We show that a simple three-dimensional ocean model linearised about a resting basic state can accurately simulate the dynamical ocean response to wind forcing by the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO).

The vertical structure of upper ocean variability at the Porcupine Abyssal Plain during 2012-2013 [PDF]
This study presents the characterization of variability in temperature, salinity and oxygen concentration, including the vertical structure of the variability, in the upper 1000m of the ocean over a full year in the northeast Atlantic.

The surface diurnal warm layer in the Indian Ocean during CINDY/DYNAMO [PDF]
A surface diurnal warm layer is diagnosed from Seaglider observations, and develops on half the days in the CINDY/DYNAMO Indian Ocean experiment. The diurnal warm layer occurs on days of high solar radiation flux (>80 W m-2) and low wind speed (

Amplification effect of intra-seasonal variability of soil moisture on heat extremes over Eurasia
Drying soil has been conducive to a high frequency of extreme high-temperature events over many regions worldwide in recent decades. However, changes in the intraseasonal variability of soil moisture can also influence the likelihood of extremely high ...

Vertical Heating Structures Associated with the MJO as Characterized by TRMM Estimates, ECMWF Reanalyses, and Forecasts: A Case Study during 1998/99 Winter [PDF]
The Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) is a fundamental mode of the tropical atmosphere variability that exerts significant influence on global climate and weather systems.

Intraseasonal Variability in a Dry Atmospheric Model
Abstract A long integration of a primitive equation dry atmospheric model with time-independent forcing under boreal winter conditions is analyzed. A variety of techniques such as time filtering, space–time spectral analysis, and lag regressions are used to identify tropical waves.

Origin of intraseasonal variability in Lake Tanganyika [PDF]
Intraseasonal thermocline oscillations in Lake Tanganyika are analysed using observations near Mpulungu and simple analytical/numerical models, in order to understand their origin. The region around the lake is characterised by strong and persistent southeast winds during the four months dry season, lasting from May to August.

Enhanced intraseasonal rainfall variability over Northeast Australia
Understanding changes in intraseasonal rainfall variability is critical for improving sub-seasonal prediction. While the amplification of intraseasonal rainfall variability across Australia has been reported, the spatial heterogeneity of this ...
