Intraspecific food competition in fishes

Fish and Fisheries, 2006
AbstractIntraspecific food competition exerts powerful selective forces on all animals; successful foragers thrive relative to weaker conspecifics. Understanding competition is therefore fundamental both to ecological insight and to conservation efforts.

NATURAL SELECTION ON HYDROID COLONY MORPHOLOGY BY INTRASPECIFIC COMPETITION [PDF]

open access: yesEvolution; International Journal of Organic Evolution, 1991
Previous work on colonial hydroids in the genus Hydractinia has demonstrated that colony morphology is highly variable and determines intraspecific competitive ability. Competitive encounters are known to be common in nature, suggesting that intraspecific competition may be a major selective force acting on morphological variation.

INTRASPECIFIC COMPETITION AND THE EVOLUTION OF VIRULENCE IN A PARASITIC TREMATODE

Evolution, 2005
Intrahost competition between parasite genotypes has been predicted to be an important force shaping parasite ecology and evolution and has been extensively cited as a mechanism for the evolution of increased parasite virulence. However, empirical evidence demonstrating the existence and nature of intraspecific competition is lacking for many parasites.

Intraspecific competition delays recovery of population structure

Aquatic Toxicology, 2010
Ecotoxicological field studies have shown that total abundance and biomass often recover shortly after pulsed toxicant stress. In contrast, population structure showed comparatively long-term alterations before reaching pre-treatment conditions. We investigated two mechanisms that may explain the prolonged recovery of population structure: latent ...

Herbivory and intraspecific competition in a stream caddisfly population

Oecologia, 1987
Field experiments were conducted to assess the effects of different population densities of the herbivorous caddisfly Helicopsyche borealis on periphyton biomass and on its own growth rate in Big Sulphur Creek, a third-order stream in northern California, USA.

Understanding intraspecific and apparent competition

2022
AbstractInterspecific competition shares the same dependence on consumer–resource interactions as intraspecific competition and apparent competition. These two related interactions are the subject of this chapter. Both interactions are present in most, if not all, systems in which interspecific competition occurs.

On a Genetic Model of Intraspecific Competition and Stabilizing Selection

The American Naturalist, 2002
A genetic model is investigated in which two recombining loci determine the genotypic value of a quantitative trait additively. Two opposing evolutionary forces are assumed to act: stabilizing selection on the trait, which favors genotypes with an intermediate phenotype, and intraspecific competition mediated by that trait, which favors genotypes whose

Intraspecific Competition and Evolution

1988
Adaptation through natural selection is one of the key elements of the Darwinian theory of evolution. This process has been the focus of much attention, partly because of its importance in the understanding of biological evolution, and partly because it appears as a nice directed deterministic process.

Intraspecific competition in Tridacna crocea, a burrowing bivalve

Oecologia, 1978
Intraspecific competition for space and light occurred when Tridacna crocea burrowed into coralline substratum of boulders on leeward coral reefs in the central Great Barrier Reef near Townsville, Australia. Intensity of competition was linearly related to clam density. Above about 200 clams/m2, all clams physically contacted one another and all shells
