An intrinsic reward for affordance exploration

2009 IEEE 8th International Conference on Development and Learning, 2009
In this paper, we present preliminary results demonstrating how a robot can learn environmental affordances in terms of the features that predict successful control and interaction. We extend previous work in which we proposed a learning framework that allows a robot to develop a series of hierarchical, closed-loop manipulation behaviors.

Intrinsic Motivation Model Based on Reward Gating

2021
Intrinsic motivation (IM) research is a promising part of reinforcement learning which can push artificial agents to completely new frontiers. Namely, from agents with a simple action repertoire, driven by the human engineered reward, to more autonomous agents with their own goals and skill development, able to act successfully in the environments ...

The Effects of Cooperative and Individualistic Reward on Intrinsic Motivation

The Journal of Genetic Psychology, 1994
The effects of cooperative versus individualistic reward on students' intrinsic motivation were investigated. The controlling aspects of extrinsic reward may be heightened or produce greater ego threat in the individualistic situation when compared with a group situation.

The effects of extrinsic rewards in intrinsic motivation: A meta‐analysis

Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, 1992
Whereas some studies have shown that contingently applied extrinsic rewards decrease intrinsic motivation created by an interesting task, an equal number of studies have failed to support this phenomenon, known as the overjustification effect. Research studies from work and organizational psychology journals were categorized according to whether ...

Exploration via Progress-Driven Intrinsic Rewards

2020
Traditional exploration methods in reinforcement learning rely on well-designed extrinsic rewards. However, many real-world scenarios involve sparse or delayed rewards. One solution inspired by curious behaviors in animals is to let the agent develop its own intrinsic rewards.

COMBINED EFFECTS OF INTRINSIC AND EXTRINSIC REWARDS ON MOTIVATION

Psychological Reports, 1991
Contrasting predictions from expectancy valence and cognitive evaluation theories were tested in a 2 × 2 factorial design in which intrinsic and extrinsic rewards were independently manipulated. Based on critiques of earlier research, several relevant factors were considered in the present design: type of extrinsic reward, measure of intrinsic ...

Evolved Intrinsic Reward Functions for Reinforcement Learning

Proceedings of the AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence, 2010
Reward functions in reinforcement learning have largely been assumed given as part of the problem being solved by the agent. However, the psychological notion of intrinsic motivation has recently inspired inquiry into whether there exist alternate reward functions that enable an agent to learn a task more easily than the natural task ...
