The peer teachers’ perception of intrinsic motivation and rewards [PDF]
Peer-assisted learning (PAL) is an educational method commonly applied in academic teaching. It is characterized by the interplay between peer teachers and learners who are at a similar academic level. Although it has been shown that peer teachers benefit from participating in PAL, little is known about their perception of motivation and rewards. Here

Visual novelty, curiosity, and intrinsic reward in machine learning and the brain. [PDF]
A strong preference for novelty emerges in infancy and is prevalent across the animal kingdom. When incorporated into reinforcement-based machine learning algorithms, visual novelty can act as an intrinsic reward signal that vastly increases the ...

An intrinsic reward mechanism for efficient exploration
How should a reinforcement learning agent act if its sole purpose is to efficiently learn an optimal policy for later use? In other words, how should it explore, to be able to exploit later? We formulate this problem as a Markov Decision Process by explicitly modeling the internal state of the agent and propose a principled heuristic for its solution ...

Organoids in pediatric cancer research
Organoid technology has revolutionized cancer research, yet its application in pediatric oncology remains limited. Recent advances have enabled the development of pediatric tumor organoids, offering new insights into disease biology, treatment response, and interactions with the tumor microenvironment.

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Adapting Behavior via Intrinsic Reward: A Survey and Empirical Study
Learning about many things can provide numerous benefits to a reinforcement learning system. For example, learning many auxiliary value functions, in addition to optimizing the environmental reward, appears to improve both exploration and representation ...
