Harnessing genetic variation for grain quality from diverse wheat landraces

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Grain protein content is usually measured on bulk samples, hiding variation between individual grains. We used hyperspectral imaging to predict protein in c. 15 000 single grains from over 500 Watkins wheat landraces grown in two environments, resolving both mean protein content and grain‐to‐grain uniformity.

Diversification and coexistence amid widespread and persistent gene flow in Andean trees

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Andean Prunus species diversify into and occupy distinct elevation zones, remaining morphologically distinct. Yet, ancient introgression and recent admixture cross both phylogenetic and ecological distances. This suggests these species function as a long‐lived syngameon rather than fully isolated lineages, which may help explain how tree diversity ...

High‐Contiguity Haplotype‐Resolved Genome Assembly of the Hexaploid Actinidia valvata Rootstock Sheds Light on Waterlogging Resistance Gene

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Polyploidisation, creating redundant or diverged copies of the genome, is a major driving force in plant evolution, diversification and environmental adaptation, including for the kiwifruit genus (Actinidia Lindl.). We present a high‐contiguity, haplotype‐resolved genome assembly of the hexaploid Actinidia valvata rootstock cultivar ...

Genetic Dissection of Wheat Heterosis Identifies Candidate Genes in Biparental and Diverse Hybrid Populations

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Understanding how numerous heterotic quantitative trait loci (hQTL) shape heterosis and shifting from hQTL to candidate genes are central challenges. To address these challenges, we performed a systematic, genome‐wide mapping in a biparental population and a population of diverse hybrids.

Genotype-dependent salt tolerance mechanisms in wheat–Thinopyrum introgression lines revealed by ion transporter gene expression and seedling phenotyping

open access: yesScientific Reports
Soil salinity significantly impairs wheat growth and yield worldwide. Wild relatives of wheat, such as Thinopyrum species, harbor valuable salt tolerance traits that can improve cultivated wheat via introgression.

Vegetative growth and water use characterization of a maize introgression library [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Previous work showed that a maize introgression library (IL) derived from the cross between Gaspé Flint (an early flowering Canadian landrace) and B73 (the reference maize line) segregated for phenology as well for seminal root architecture (SRA) traits.

Gap‐Free Cannabis sativa Assemblies Reveal Post‐Polyploid Genome Remodelling and Refine the Evolution of Cannabinoid Synthase Genes

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Despite the therapeutic importance of cannabinoids, the scarcity of gap‐free Cannabis genomes has limited the dissection of the genetic and genomic basis of cannabinoid biosynthesis and genome evolution. Here, we generated two haplotype‐phased, gap‐free, gold‐standard assemblies and used them to investigate post‐polyploid genome remodelling ...

A Repertoire of Major Genes From Crop Wild Relatives for Breeding Disease‐Resistant Wheat, Rice, Maize, Soybean and Cotton Crops

open access: yesPlant Breeding, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Global food demand is predicted to rise anywhere from 59% to 98% by 2050 because of increasing population. However, the continued depletion of natural resources and increasing biotic and abiotic stresses will continue to pose significant threats to global food security in coming years.
