Accuracy of Real-time Intratracheal Bedside Ultrasonography and Waveform Capnography for Confirmation of Intubation in Multiple Trauma Patients

open access: yesAdvanced Biomedical Research, 2018
Background: A secure airway and effective ventilation are key components of advanced life support, and misplacement of endotracheal tube (ETT) can lead to morbidity in multiple trauma patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate the accuracy of

Impact of different anesthetic protocols during anesthesia for the establishment of a porcine model of acute kidney injury

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
This study details the adaptations required to establish a long‐term anesthetic protocol in pigs. Three protocols were evaluated, with some causing malignant hyperthermia, hypoglycemia, or hemoynamic instability. The final protocol proved effective for developing a porcine AKI model requiring adequate arterial pressure maintenance.

Video Laryngoscopy vs Direct Laryngoscopy on Successful First-Pass Orotracheal Intubation Among ICU Patients: A Randomized Clinical Trial

open access: yesJournal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), 2017
Importance In the intensive care unit (ICU), orotracheal intubation can be associated with increased risk of complications because the patient may be acutely unstable, requiring prompt intervention, often by a practitioner with nonexpert skills.

The velar chord and dynamic integration of the gular valve in crocodylians

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Crocodilians have a unique gular valve that forms a seal between the oral cavity and the pharynx. The gular valve has traditionally been treated as two parts: a mobile ventral flap associated with the tongue and a fixed dorsal velum palatini. This work describes a connective tissue band, the velar chord, which functionally integrates the two parts of ...

Effect of Rocuronium vs Succinylcholine on Endotracheal Intubation Success Rate Among Patients Undergoing Out-of-Hospital Rapid Sequence Intubation: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

open access: yesJournal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), 2019
Importance Rocuronium and succinylcholine are often used for rapid sequence intubation, although the comparative efficacy of these paralytic agents for achieving successful intubation in an emergency setting has not been evaluated in clinical trials ...

Autologous Nonmyeloablative Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation for Diffuse Cutaneous Systemic Sclerosis: Identifying Disease Risk Factors for Toxicity and Long‐Term Outcomes in a Prospective, Single‐Arm Trial

open access: yesArthritis &Rheumatology, EarlyView.
Objective Two randomized trials for patients with diffuse systemic sclerosis (SSc) demonstrated an overall survival (OS) and event‐free survival (EFS) advantage of autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT) using CD34+ selected peripheral blood stem cells (PBSCs) compared with monthly cyclophosphamide (CY).

A Distributed Augmented Reality System for Medical Training and Simulation [PDF]

open access: yesEnergy, Simulation-Training, Ocean Engineering and Instrumentation: Research Papers of the Link Foundation Fellows (2004), Vol. 4, pp. 213-235, 2018
Augmented Reality (AR) systems describe the class of systems that use computers to overlay virtual information on the real world. AR environments allow the development of promising tools in several application domains. In medical training and simulation the learning potential of AR is significantly amplified by the capability of the system to present ...

Aminated graphene nanosheet stimulates the maturation of hiPSCs‐derived cardiomyocytes in vitro and enhances their survival in vivo

open access: yesBMEMat, EarlyView.
Aminated graphene (G‐NH2) niche matrix plays a pivotal role in precisely manipulating cardiac differentiation and maturation of hiPSCs. The molecular mechanism underlying cardiomyocyte maturation is closely linked to the PDGF‐β signaling pathway. Cardiomyocytes derived from the G‐NH2 matrix exhibit enhanced activity and functionality in vivo.
