Extent, characteristics and policy applications of Key Biodiversity Areas

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT A global standard for the identification of Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) was published 10 years ago to provide a unified set of criteria for identifying ‘sites of significance for the global persistence of biodiversity’. We review the initiative's origins, the KBA identification process, characteristics of the current network, threats, policy

Understanding biological invasions : an experimental study with "Carpobrotus edulis" [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
[Resumen] Las invasiones biológicas suponen una de las mayores amenazas para la conservación de la biodiversidad a nivel global. Durante los últimos años han sido muchos los trabajos que se han dirigido a intentar conocer los atributos que provocan que ...

When invasions go unnoticed: Public perception of the freshwater jellyfish Craspedacusta sowerbii in Europe

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Biological invasions are a major driver of biodiversity loss, yet inconspicuous or “cryptic” species often escape detection and public awareness, limiting management responses. We investigated the freshwater jellyfish Craspedacusta sowerbii, likely native to China and now present on six continents, through a 22‐month multilingual online survey

Tracing holotype trajectories: Mapping the movement of the most valuable herbarium specimens

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Global efforts to protect biodiversity depend on fair access to key plant specimens. This study examines the distribution of 119,361 holotypes—unique herbarium specimens used to formally describe new plant species. By linking collection and storage data, we found that holotypes are increasingly held closer to their places of origin, particularly in ...

Estudo de membrana biológica em ratos na prevenção de fibrose pós laminectomia Inhibition of peridural fibrosis after laminectomy using biological sheet in rat model

Assessing the evolutionary distinctiveness of a highly threatened plant group: The urgency to preserve a unique lineage of evolution in Brazil

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Brazil's diverse flora is under several threats, with many unique lineages facing extinction, particularly in biodiverse regions like the Cerrado and campo rupestre. This study sheds light on the conservation needs of Cambessedesia (Melastomataceae), an endemic genus with 95% of its species endangered, using an approach to rank and prioritise species ...

Digitising biological collections to advance National Species Inventories: A case study from the flora of Chile

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
In response to Chile's public policy to establish a national biodiversity inventory and monitoring system, we launched the HerbarioDigital.cl portal. We have digitised over 120,000 specimens representing more than 3,900 species from two Chilean herbaria, integrating them through a curated local taxonomic index.
