This chapter studies the causes and consequences of invasive alien species (IAS), as well as the methods to manage and mitigate their impacts. A native species (or indigenous species) is one that occurs within its natural range (past or present) and that does so in the absence of dispersal that is assisted, either directly or indirectly, by humans.

Invasive alien species and biodiversity: impacts and management
, 2021As far back as the 18th century, many naturalists including Augustin Pyramus De Candolle and Charles Darwin, observed the phenomenon of non-native species. These were defined as ‘species outside of their bioregion which can possibly threaten native ones (

Abstract We begin with a classic example of invasion, the spatial spread of muskrats (Ondatra zibethica) in central Europe from 1909 to 1927. Figure 2.1, which appeared in Elton's book (1958), gives the contours of the range of spread based on Ulbrich's data (1930).

Costs of Alien Invasive Species in Sweden
AMBIO: A Journal of the Human Environment, 2009The purpose of this paper is to present calculations of total costs of 13 alien invasive species (AIS) in Sweden.
