Adjoint modeling for acoustic inversion
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2004The use of adjoint modeling for acoustic inversion is investigated. An adjoint model is derived from a linearized forward propagation model to propagate data-model misfit at the observation points back through the medium to the medium perturbations not being accounted for in the model.

INVERSE MODELING IN GEOPHYSICAL APPLICATIONS
Applied and Industrial Mathematics in Italy II, 2007The interpretation of the potential fleld data is an useful tool that allows for both investigating the subsurface structures and providing a quantitative evaluation of the geophysical process preceding and accompanying period of volcanic unrest. Potential fleld inversion problem are required to combine forward models with appropriate optimization ...

Model calculations of inverse photoemission
Physical Review B, 1992The electron-energy distribution of inverse-photoemission yield at fixed photon energy is calculated for a one-dimensional model of the potential energy that allows for both a bulk band gap and a surface barrier with an image-potential tail. By varying the width of the band gap in this model, surface states can be transformed into surface resonances ...

A model for inversion polymorphism
Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1972Abstract Equations are derived which describe the interaction between selection and recombination under conditions of inversion polymorphism. An exhaustive list of equilibria is provided and a partial analysis of stability is given. In particular, it is found that certain systems lacking inversion are inherently unstable.

Full Model Wavenumber Inversion (FMWI)
Proceedings, 2015A model of the Earth can be described using a Fourier basis represented by its wavenumber components. In full waveform inversion (FWI), our ultimate objective is to access all the available model wavenumbers in the recorded data that are not already accurately present in the initial velocity model.

2003
When Bernard Minster and Tom Jordan, together with Peter Molnar and Ian Haines, first published their inverse plate kinematic model in 1974 (Minster et al. 1974), the affect on the tectonics community was extraordinary. Jason Morgan had already published a global plate tectonics model parameterized in Cartesian vectors (Morgan 1972a), while Clement ...

Forward Model Nonlinearity versus Inverse Model Nonlinearity
Groundwater, 2007Abstract The issue of concern is the impact of forward model nonlinearity on the nonlinearity of the inverse model. The question posed is, “Does increased nonlinearity in the head solution (forward model) always result in increased nonlinearity in the inverse solution (estimation of hydraulic conductivity)?” It is shown that the two ...

Model-reduced inverse modeling
2006Although faster computers have been developed in recent years, they tend to be used to solve even more detailed problems. In many cases this will yield enormous models that can not be solved within acceptable time constraints. Therefore, there is a need for alternative methods that simulate such models more efficiently ans conserve the detailed ...

Inverse Stereographic Gaussian DAG Models
Directed acyclic graphical models are statistical models that use a directed acyclic graph (DAG) to represent the conditional independence structure of a set of random variables. We introduce a new class of DAG models tailored for circular variables having an Inverse Stereographic Normal distribution.Anna Gottard, Agnese Panzera

Calibrating Models – Inverse Problems
2013In the previous chapters we studied several model choices to describe stock price and interest rate dynamics. When using models to valuate derivatives or to obtain a hedging strategy, the used parameters will greatly impact the results. While there is broad agreement of how to model many problems in physics (such as the thermal conductivity of copper ...
