Geophysical inversion versus machine learning in inverse problems
The Leading Edge, 2018Geophysical inversion and machine learning both provide solutions for inverse problems in which we estimate model parameters from observations. Geophysical inversions such as impedance inversion, amplitude-variation-with-offset inversion, and traveltime tomography are commonly used in the industry to yield physical properties from measured seismic data.

Sparsity in Inverse Geophysical Problems
2010Many geophysical imaging problems are ill-posed in the sense that the solution does not depend continuously on the measured data. Therefore, their solutions cannot be computed directly but instead require the application of regularization. Standard regularization methods find approximate solutions with small L 2 norm.
