Inverse methods applied to continuation problems in geophysics

This paper focuses on the application of inverse methods to continuation problems in geophysics. It is divided in three sections. The first introductory section lists a number of continuation problems which are of interest to geo physicists and gives a brief review of earlier work on the subject.

On the solution of some nonlinear inverse problems in geophysics

We show that a canonical three-dimensional domain can be mapped onto unknown source of masses with the help of dispersionless two-dimensional (2D) Toda integrable hierarchies. The maps are determined by a particular approximate solution to a set of 2D Toda hierarchies singled out by the condition known in the 2D case as ‘string equations’.

Highly Dimensional, Highly Non-linear Inverse Problems in Geophysics

Interpretation of seismic data leads to an interesting inverse problem where the parameters to be estimated are the acoustic properties of the Earth. Two sorts of elastic parameters can be resolved, the long wave lengths associated to seismic velocities and the short wavelengths associated to seismic impedances.
