An introduction to variational inference in geophysical inverse problems
In a variety of scientific applications we wish to characterize a physical system using measurements or observations. This often requires us to solve an inverse problem, which usually has non-unique solutions so uncertainty must be quantified in order to define the family of all possible solutions.

Seismic Ray Impedance Inversion [PDF]
This thesis investigates a prestack seismic inversion scheme implemented in the ray parameter domain. Conventionally, most prestack seismic inversion methods are performed in the incidence angle domain.

Parallelized Adaptive Importance Sampling for Solving Inverse Problems
In the field of groundwater hydrology and more generally geophysics, solving inverse problems in a complex, geologically realistic, and discrete model space often requires the usage of Monte Carlo methods.

Tomographic inversion of time-domain resistivity and chargeability data for the investigation of landfills using a priori information [PDF]
In this paper, we present a new code for the modelling and inversion of resistivity and chargeability data using a priori information to improve the accuracy of the reconstructed model for landfill.

Basis Pursuit Receiver Function [PDF]
Receiver functions (RFs) are derived by deconvolution of the horizontal (radial or transverse) component of ground motion from the vertical component, which segregates the PS phases. Many methods have been proposed to employ deconvolution in frequency as

Data Fusion for Electromagnetic and Electrical Resistive Tomography Based on Maximum Likelihood
This paper presents a maximum likelihood based approach to data fusion for electromagnetic (EM) and electrical resistive (ER) tomography. The statistical maximum likelihood criterion is closely linked to the additive Fisher information measure, and it ...

Anelastic sensitivity kernels with parsimonious storage for adjoint tomography and full waveform inversion [PDF]
We introduce a technique to compute exact anelastic sensitivity kernels in the time domain using parsimonious disk storage. The method is based on a reordering of the time loop of time-domain forward/adjoint wave propagation solvers combined with the use

Statistical inverse inference for solving the first kind of nonlinear Fredholm integral equation
Inverse problems, widely applied in geology, oceanography, and geophysics, are often ill-posed, presenting significant challenges. This study addresses the first kind of nonlinear Fredholm integral equation derived from gravity measurement and magnetic ...

Solving ill-posed magnetic inverse problem using a Parameterized Trust-Region Sub-problem
The aim of this paper is to find a plausible and stable solution for the inverse geophysical magnetic problem. Most of the inverse problems in geophysics are considered as ill-posed ones.
